Question : 11 [SSC Constable 2015]

In a college election a candidate secured 62% of the votes and is elected by a margin of 144 votes. The total number of votes polled is :

a) 1200

b) 925

c) 800

d) 600

Answer: (d)

Total number of votes polled = x (let)

According to the question,

${x × 62}/100 - {x × (100 - 62)}/100 = 144$

${62x}/100 - {38x}/100 = 144$

${24x}/100 = 144$

24x = 144 × 100

$x = {144 × 100}/24 = 600$

Using Rule 26,

Total number of votes = ${50 × 144}/{(50 - 62)}$

= ${50 × 144}/12$ ´

(–ve sign will be neglected)

= 600

Question : 12 [SSC CGL Tier-I 2014]

In an election, a candidate who gets 84 % of the votes is elected by a majority of 476 votes. What is the total number of votes polled ?

a) 600

b) 900

c) 700

d) 810

Answer: (c)

Total number of votes polled = x

${x × 84}/100 - {x × 16}/100 = 476$

${68x}/100 = 476$

$x = {476 × 100}/68 = 700$

Using Rule 26,

If a candidate got A% votes in a poll and he won or defeated by 'x' votes, then, what was the total no. of votes which was cast in the poll?

∴ Total no. of votes = ${50 × x}/{50 - A}$

Total number of votes = ${50 × 476}/{50 - 84}$

= ${50 × 476}/34$

(–ve sign will be neglected)

= 700

Question : 13 [SSC MTS 2013]

Two persons contested an election of Parliament. The winning candidate secured 57% of the total votes polled and won by a majority of 42,000 votes. The number of total votes polled is

a) 3,00,000

b) 5,00,000

c) 4,00,000

d) 6,00,000

Answer: (a)

Total votes polled = x

(57 – 43)% of x = 42000

$x × 14/100 = 42000$

$x = {42000 × 100}/14 = 300000$

Using Rule 26,

Total number of votes= ${50 × 42000}/{50 - 57}$

= ${50 × 42000}/{-7}$ = 300000

(–ve sign will be neglected)

Question : 14 [SSC CGL Prelim 2003]

8% of the voters in an election did not cast their votes. In this election, there were only two candidates. The winner by obtaining 48% of the total votes defeated his contestant by 1100 votes. The total number of voters in the election was :

a) 22000

b) 21000

c) 27500

d) 23500

Answer: (c)

Let the total number of votes be 100.

Number of uncast votes = 8

Number of votes polled = 92

Number of votes obtained by the winner = 48

Number of votes obtained by the loser = 92 – 48 = 44

If the difference of win be 4 votes, total voters = 100

When the difference be 1100 votes, total voters

= $100/4 × 1100$ = 27500

Using Rule 21,

The amount of acid/milk is x% in 'M' litre mixture. How much water should be mixed in it so that the percentage amount of acid/milk would be y%?

Amount of water = ${M(x – y)}/y$

Here, x = 1100, A = 48

Total number of votes = ${50 × x}/{50 - A}$

= ${50 × 1100}/{50 - 48}$

= ${50 × 1100}/2$

= 25 × 1100 = 27500
