Divide 56 into two parts such that three times the first part exceeds one third of the second by 48. The parts are :

Let the firth part be x, then second part will be (56 – x)
According to the question
$3x - {1/3}(56-x)=48⇒3x-{{56}/3} + {x/3}$ = 48
$3x + {x/3}= 48+ {{56}/3} ⇒ {10x}/{3}={200}/3$
∴ x = ${200}/{10}$ = 20 and y = 56 - 20 = 36
In two alloys, the ratio of iron and copper is 4 : 3 and 6 : 1, respectively. If 14 kg of the first alloy and 42 kg of the second alloy is mixed together to form a new alloy, then what will be the ratio of iron to copper in the new alloy ?

Rs. 120 is distributed among A, B and C so that A's share is Rs. 20 more than B's and Rs. 20 less than C's. What is B's share?

Let share of A be x
share of B = x – 20
share of C = x + 20
According to the question
x + x – 20 + x + 20 = 120
⇒3x = 120 ∴ x = ${120}/3$ = 40
Hence, share of B = 40 – 20 = 20
The scale of map is $3/4$ of cm = 1 km. If the distance on the map between two towns is 60 cm, then the actual distance is

Let actual distance be x km. Then,
$3/4$ : 1 : : 60 : x
⇒$3/4$ x = 60⇒x=${240}/{3}$ = 80km
Sarita started a boutique investing an amount of Rs. 50,000. Six months later Neeta joined her with an amount of Rs. 80,000. At the end of one year they earned a profit of Rs. 18, 000. What is Sarita's share in the profit?

Ratio of capital = 50000 × 12 : 80000 × 6 = 5 : 4
∴ Sarita's share = ${18000 × 5}/{(5 + 4)}$ = Rs.10000
