Question : 26 [SSC GL Tier-II 2012]

In an examination, 52% students failed in Hindi and 42% in English. If 17% failed in both the subjects, what percentage of students passed in both the subjects ?

a) 23%

b) 33%

c) 18%

d) 38%

Answer: (a)

Let the total number of students = 100

Number of students who failed in Hindi or English or both

= 52 + 42 – 17 = 77

Number of students who passed in both subjects

= 100 – 77 = 23%

Required percentage = 23

Using Rule 23,

a = 52%, b = 42%, c = 17%

Passed candidates = 100 – (52 + 42 – 17)

= 100 – (94 – 17) = 100 – 77 = 23%

Question : 27 [SSC SO 2007]

In a test a student got 30% marks and failed by 25 marks. In the same test another student got 40% marks and secured 25 marks more than the essential minimum pass marks. The maximum marks for the test were

a) 500

b) 480

c) 580

d) 400

Answer: (a)

Let the maximum marks in the examination = x.

According to the question,

${40x}/100 - {30x}/100 = 50$

${10x}/100 = 50$

$x = {50 × 100}/10 = 500$

Using Rule 22,

m = 30%, n = 40%, p = 25 and q = 25

Maximum marks = $100/{(n - m)} × (p + q)$

= $100/{(40 - 30)} × (25 + 25) = 500$

Question : 28 [SSC CPO S.I.2010]

In an examination, a student had to obtain 33% of the maximum marks to pass. He got 125 marks and failed by 40 marks. The maximum marks were

a) 800

b) 600

c) 1000

d) 500

Answer: (d)

Let the maximum marks be x.

${x × 33}/100 = 125 + 40 = 165$

x = ${165 × 100}/33 =500$

Using Rule 24,

a = 33%, b = 125, c = 40

Maximum marks = ${(b + c)}/a × 100$

= ${(125 + 40)}/33 × 100$

= ${165 × 100}/35 = 500$

Question : 29 [SSC CGL Prelim 2004]

Two students appeared at an examination. One of them secured 9 marks more than the other and his marks were 56% of the sum of their marks. The marks obtained by them are :

a) 41, 32

b) 43, 34

c) 39, 30

d) 42, 33

Answer: (d)

Let the marks obtained by first student be x.

Marks obtained by second student = x + 9

Sum of their marks = 2x + 9

As given, x + 9 = 56% of (2x + 9)

x + 9 = $56/100 × (2x + 9)$

$x + 9 = 14/25 × (2x + 9)$

25x + 225 = 28x + 126

3x = 225 – 126 ⇒ $x = 99/3 = 33$

Marks obtained are 42 and 33.

Question : 30 [SSC CHSL 2011]

In an examination in which full marks were 500, A got 10% less than B. B got 25% more than C. C got 20% less than D. If A got 360 marks, what percentage of full marks was obtained by D ?

a) 50%

b) 80%

c) 60%

d) 90%

Answer: (b)

A = 360;

B = ${360 × 100}/90 = 400$

C = ${400 × 100}/125 = 320$

D = ${320 × 100}/80 = 400$

Required percentage = $400/500 ×100 = $80%
