  2. if only assumption II is implicit.
  3. if either I or II is implicit.
  4. if neither I nor II is implicit.
  5. if both I and II are implicit.

Question : 41

Statement:
“Despite a draconian crackdown against software pirates announced by country X last year, the country remains the world’s third largest market for bootleg computer programs.”

Assumptions:
I. Computer piracy is declining globally but increasing in country X.
II. A draconian crackdown against software pirates may bring the bootleggers to heel.

Answer: (b)

Global computer piracy is not mentioned in the statement. Therefore, assumption I is not implicit. But assumption II is implicit. That is why the journalist uses the word ‘despite’ in his statement.
