2. If only conclusion II follows;
3. If either I or II follows;
4. If neither I nor II follows; and

Question : 1 [I.B.P.S. 2002]

• Statement:
• This book 'Z' is the only book that focuses its attention on the problem of poverty in India between 1950 and 1980.
• Conclusions:
• I. There was no question of poverty before 1950.
• II. No other book deals with Poverty in India from 1950 to 1980.

a) If only conclusion I follows;

b) If only conclusion II follows;

c) If either I or II follows;

d) If neither I nor II follows;

e) If both I and II follow.

The phrase 'only book' in the statement makes II implicit.

However, nothing about the state of poverty before 1950 can be deduced from the statement. So, Conclusion I do not follow.

Question : 2 [I.A.M. 2003]

• Statement:
• Only good singers are invited to the conference. No one without a sweet voice is a good singer.
• Conclusions:
• I. All invited singers at the conference have a sweet voice.
• II. Those singers who do not have a sweet voice are not invited to the conference.

a) If only conclusion I follows;

b) If only conclusion II follows;

c) If either I or II follows;

d) If neither I nor II follows;

e) If both I and II follow.

The statement asserts that a good singer always has a sweet voice and only good singers are invited to the conference.

This implies that all those invited to the conference have a sweet voice and those who do not have a sweet voice are not invited. So, both I and II follow.

Question : 3 [G.B.O. 2006]

• Statement:
• No country is absolutely self - dependent these days.
• Conclusions:

a) If only conclusion I follows;

b) If only conclusion II follows;

c) If either I or II follows;

d) If neither I nor II follows;

e) If both I and II follow.

Clearly, only I provide a suitable explanation for the given statement.

So, only I follow the conditions.

Question : 4 [M.A.T. 2005]

• Statement:
• Until our country achieves economic equality, political freedom and democracy would be meaningless.
• Conclusions:

a) If only conclusion I follows;

b) If only conclusion II follows;

c) If either I or II follows;

d) If neither I nor II follows;

e) If both I and II follow.

Nothing about the relation between political freedom and democracy is mentioned in the statement.

So, I do not follow. But II directly follows from the given statement.

Question : 5 [I.B.P.S. 2002]

• For over three decades company X has been totally involved in energy conservation, its efficient use, and management.
• Conclusions:
• I. The company has yet to learn and acquire basic things in this area.
• II. It is the dedication that is more important than knowledge and expertise.

a) If only conclusion I follows;

b) If only conclusion II follows;

c) If either I or II follows;

d) If neither I nor II follows;

e) If both I and II follow.

Since the company has been working in this area for three decades, it must have the necessary expertise and infrastructure required in this field. So, I does not follow.

However, the qualities that have made the company X successful in this field have not been mentioned. So, II also does not follow.
