based on one statement & three or more assumptions Practice Questions Answers Test with Solutions & More Shortcuts

Directions:
In each question below is given a statement followed by three assumptions numbered I, II and III. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions, decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement and choose your answer accordingly.

Question : 11 [PGDBM, 2002]

  • Statement:
  • Items in big showrooms in main markets are costlier than similar items in small shops

  • Assumptions:
  • I. Items in small shops are never reliable.
  • II. Persons managing big showrooms are cheats.
  • III. Maintenance of big showrooms is an expensive affair in itself, hence the prices are a little higher.

a) None is implicit

b) Only I is implicit

c) Only II is implicit

d) Only III is implicit

e) Either II or III is implicit

Answer: (d)

Clearly, only III defines the correct essence of the statement and hence is implicit.

Question : 12 [S.B.I.P.O. I999]

  • Statement:
  • The employees' association has appealed to the Managers of Company Z to introduce written examinations for clerical cadre recruitment to prevent selection of incompetent persons.

  • Assumptions:
  • I. So far the Company Z used to select candidates without conducting a written examination.
  • II. A written examination can help to identify competent persons.
  • III. At a higher level, written examination may not be of much use.

a) Only I and II are implicit

b) Only II and III are implicit

c) Only I and III are implicit

d) Only III is implicit

e) None of these

Answer: (a)

An appeal has been made to ‘introduce’ written examination. This means that so far written examination was not conducted.

So, I is implicit. II follows directly from the statement and so it is implicit. However, nothing can be deduced about the mode of selection at a higher level.

So, III is not implicit.

Question : 13 [M.A.T. 2003]

  • Statement:
  • In spite of the heavy rains the traffic has not been disrupted this year

  • Assumptions:
  • I. The traffic is disrupted in rainy seasons only.
  • II. Rains do not affect traffic movement.
  • III. Adequate precautions were taken for traffic management during the rainy season.

a) Only I is implicit

b) Only I and II are implicit

c) Only III is implicit

d) Only II and III are implicit

e) None is implicit

Answer: (c)

The statement expresses surprise at the traffic situation remaining normal even after rains. This means that rains affect traffic.

So, II is not implicit. But this does not mean that only rains affect traffic.

So, I is also not implicit. Since the traffic was not affected during rains as expected, so III is implicit.

Question : 14 [M.B.A. 2004]

  • Statement:
  • Keeping in view the financial constraints, the management institution has decided to charge at the time of providing employment in various organisations, a placement fee of Rs. 25000 from the organisations in which the student will be provided with the employment.

  • Assumptions:
  • I. It will help in increasing the demand of the students belonging to the management institution.
  • II. The amount collected in this way will be purposeful.
  • III. It may be possible that the organisation providing employment may select less number of students in future.

a) None is implicit

b) Only I is implicit

c) Only I and II are implicit

d) Only II and III are implicit

e) None of these

Answer: (d)

Since the management has imposed a fee of Rs. 25000 for the employment of each student by the organization, so III is implicit while I is not.

Since the statement mentions that the fee is being charged to cover up the financial constraint, so II is implicit.

Question : 15 [Bank P.O. 2004]

  • Statement:
  • Give this packet to Mr X at his residence and return immediately. In case you are likely to late inform me- Mr A tells his clerk.

  • Assumptions:
  • I. The clerk never informs about his late coming.
  • II. The clerk may not obey Mr A's instructions.
  • III. The clerk may not inform his late coming unless instructed.

a) Only I and II are implicit

b) Only II and III are implicit

c) Only I and III are implicit

d) Only III is implicit

e) None of these

Answer: (d)

Clearly, the statement is merely a reminder. So, I is not implicit. Besides, the clerk is expected to execute his boss' order.

So, II is not implicit. Also, a hunch that the clerk may not inform about his late coming has led Mr A to instruct the clerk to do so.

So, III is implicit.
