Question : 31

The price of sugar is increased by 20%. If the expenditure on sugar has to be kept the same as earlier, the ratio between the reduction in consumption and the original consumption is

a) 1 : 6

b) 1 : 5

c) 1 : 4

d) 1 : 3

Answer: (a)

The raised price = $120/100$ of the former price

The householder must now consume $100/120$ of the original amount

The reduction in consumption = $(1 – 100/120)$ of the original consumption = $1/6$ of the original consumption

i.e. 1 : 6

Using Rule 8,

If the income of a man is A% more than another man, then income of another man is less in comparison to the 1st man by

$(A/(100 + A)× 100)%$

Required percentage = $(20/{100 + 20})×100$

= $20/120×100$ = $100/6$%

Required ratio = 1 : 6

Question : 32 [SSC CAPFs 2015]

The ratio of the number of boys to that of girls in a village is 3 : 2. If 30% of boys and 70% of girls appeared in an examination, the ratio of the number of villagers, appreared in the examination to that not appeared in the same examination is

a) 1 : 1

b) 27 : 23

c) 23 : 27

d) 9 : 14

Answer: (c)

Boys in the village = 3x

Girls in the village = 2x

Villagers who appeared in the examination

= ${3x × 30}/100 + {2x × 70}/100$

= ${9x}/10 + {14x}/10 = {23x}/10$

Villagers who did not appear in the examination

= ${3x × 70}/100 + {2x × 30}/100$

= ${21x}/10 + {6x}/10 = {27x}/10$

Required ratio = ${23x}/10 : {27x}/10$ = 23 : 27

Question : 33 [SSC SO2003]

Two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3. If 20% of the smaller number added to 20 is equal to the sum of 10% of the larger number and 25, then the smaller number is

a) 180

b) 200

c) 160

d) 100

Answer: (d)

Let the numbers be 2x and 3x.

According to the question,$(20/100 × 2x) + 20$

= $(10/100 × 3x) + 25$

${2x}/5 + 20 = {3x}/10 + 25$

${2x}/5 - {3x}/10$ = 25 - 20

${4x - 3x}/10$ = 5 ⇒ x = 50

The smaller number = 2x = 100

Question : 34 [SSC CGL Prelim 2004]

If 30% of A = 0.25 of B = $1/5$ of C, then A : B : C is equal to :

a) 6 : 5 : 4

b) 10 : 12 : 15

c) 5 : 24 : 5

d) 5 : 6 : 4

Answer: (b)

30% of A = 25% of B

30 A = 25 B

A : B = 25 : 30 = 5 : 6

Again, 25% of B = 20% of C

25 B = 20C ⇒ 5B = 4C

B : C = 4 : 5

A : B : C = 5 × 4 : 4 × 6 : 6 × 5

= 20 : 24 : 30 = 10 : 12 : 15

Question : 35

If 35% of A's income is equal to 25% of B's income, then the ratio of A's income to B's income is

a) 4 : 7

b) 4 : 3

c) 5 : 7

d) 7 : 5

Answer: (c)

According to the question, A × 35% = B × 25%

$A/B = 25/35 = 5/7$
