Question : 6 [SSC CPO S.I.2008]

A, B and C entered into partnership in a business. A got $3/5$ of the profit and B and C distributed the remaining profit equally. If C got Rs.400 less than A, the total profit was

a) Rs.1200

b) Rs.1600

c) Rs.1000

d) Rs.800

Answer: (c)

Let the total profit be Rs.x.

A ’s share in profit = Rs.${3x}/5$

B ’s share in profit = Rs.$x/5$

and C ’s share in profit = Rs.$x/5$

According to the question,

$({3x}/5 - x/5)$ = 400

${2x}/5$ = 400

$x = {400 × 5}/2$ = Rs.1000

Question : 7 [SSC CPO S.I.2010]

If the ratio of cost price and the selling price is 5 : 6, the gain per cent is

a) 33$1/3$%

b) 20%

c) 25%

d) 30%

Answer: (b)

Using Rule 1,

If S.P > C.P. then there will be profit

Profit = S.P. - C.P.

Profit% = ${\text"Profit" × 100}/{\text"C.P."}$

Let the cost price = 5x

and the selling price = 6x.

Gain % =${6x - 5x}/{5x} × 100$ = 20%

a) 2 : 3

b) 1 : 2

CP of the mixture = ${324 × 100}/120$ = Rs.270

∴ Required ratio = 2 : 5

Question : 9 [SSC SO 2006]

Nita blends two varieties of tea— one costing Rs.180 per kg and another costing Rs.200 per kg in the ratio 5 : 3. If she sells the blended variety at Rs.210 per kg, then her gain percent is

a) 11%

b) 10%

c) 12%

Answer: (c)

Gain per cent

= ${1680 - 1500}/1500 × 100$

= $180/1500 × 100$ = 12%

Question : 10 [SSC CPO S.I.2003]

The cash difference between selling prices of an article at a profit of 4% and 6% is Rs.3. The ratio of the two selling prices is

a) 52 : 53

b) 51 : 52

c) 51 : 53

d) 52 : 55

Answer: (a)

Let the C.P. be x

(6 - 4)% of x = 3

2% of x = 3 ⇒ x =$300/2$ = 150

S.P. at 4% gain = ${150 × 104}/100$ = Rs.156

and S.P. at 6% gain = ${150 × 106}/100$ = Rs.159

The required ratio = 156 : 159 = 52 : 53
