Question : 1 [SSC CPO S.I 2005]

In a school 40% of the students play football and 50% play cricket. If 18% of the students neither play football nor cricket, the percentage of the students playing both is :

a) 22%

b) 8%

c) 40%

d) 32%

Answer: (b)

Since 18% of the students neither play football nor cricket. It means 82% of the students either play football or cricket or both.

Using set theory

n(A ? B) = n(A) + n(B) – n(A ? B)

82 = 40 + 50 – n(A ? B)

n(A ? B) = 90 – 82 = 8

8% students play both games.

Question : 2 [SSC CAPFs SI 2013]

In a big garden 60% of the trees are coconut trees, 25% of the number of coconut trees are mango trees and 20% of the number of mango trees are apple trees. If the number of apple trees are 1500, then the number of trees in the garden is :

a) 51000

b) 45000

c) 48000

d) 50000

Answer: (d)

If the number of trees in the garden be x, then

$x × 60/100 × 25/100 × 20/100 = 1500$

$x × 3/5 × 1/4 × 1/5 = 1500$

$x = {1500 × 5 × 4 × 5}/3$

= 50000

Question : 3

Half of 1 per cent, written as a decimal, is

a) 0.005

b) 0.05

c) 0.2

d) 0.02

Answer: (a)

1% = $1/100$

$1/100 × 1/2 = 1/200 = 0.005$

Question : 4

If 30% of A is added to 40% of B, the answer is 80% of B. What percentage of A is B?

a) 70%

b) 75%

c) 30%

d) 40%

Answer: (b)

$A × 30/100 + {B × 40}/100 = {B × 80}/100$

A × 30 = B × 40

$A/B = 40/30 = 4/3$

$B/A = 3/4$

$B/A × 100 = 3/4$ × 100 = 75%

Question : 5 [SSC CHSL 2012]

A number is divided into two parts in such a way that 80% of 1st part is 3 more than 60% of 2nd part and 80% of 2nd part is 6 more than 90% of the 1st part. Then the number is

a) 135

b) 145

c) 125

d) 130

Answer: (a)

First part =Rs.x and second part = Rs.y.

${x × 80}/100 = {y × 60}/100 +3$

${4x}/5 = {3y}/5 +3$

4x – 3y = 15 ...(i)

Again, ${4y}/5 = {9x}/10 + 6$

8y = 9x + 60

8y – 9x = 60 ...(ii)

By equation (i) × 8 + (ii) × 3,

32x – 24y = 120

24y – 27x = 180

By adding the above two equation.We get,

5x = 300 ⇒ x = 60

From equation (i)

4 × 60 - 3y = 15

3y = 240 – 15 = 225

y = $225/3$ = 75

x + y = 60 + 75 = 135
