Question : 1 [SSC FCI Ass Grade-III 2013]

A box contains 56 in the form of coins of one rupee, 50 paise and 25 paise. The number of 50 paise coins is double the number of 25 paise coins and four times the number of one rupee coins. How many 50 paise coins are there in the box?

a) 32

b) 16

c) 64

d) 52

Answer: (c)

Number of 1-rupee coins = x

Number of 50 paise coins = 4x

Number of 25 paise coins = 2x

Ratio of their values

= $x : {4x}/2 : {2x}/4$ = 2 : 4 : 1

Value of 50-paise coins

= $4/7 × 56$ = Rs.32

Their number = 32 × 2 = 64

(x )(1)+(4x ) $(1/2)+(2x)(1/4)$= 56

x + 2x + $1/2$x =56

$x = 56 × 2/7$ =16

No. of 50p coins

= 4 × 16 = 64.

Question : 2 [SSC CGL Prelim 2008]

A boy has a few coins of denominations 50 paise, 25 paise and 10 paise in the ratio 1 : 2 : 3. If the total amount of the coins is 6.50, the number of 10 paise coins is

a) 15

b) 20

c) 10

d) 5

Answer: (a)

Ratio of the value of coins

= $1/2 : 2/4 : 3/10$ = 5 : 5 : 3

Value of the 10-paise coins

= Rs.$(3/13 × 6.50)$ = Rs.1.5

Number of 10-paise coins

= 1.5 × 10 = 15

Question : 3 [SSC SO 2007]

In a bag, there are three types of coins — 1-rupee, 50 paise and 25-paise in the ratio of 3 : 8 : 20. Their total value is 372. The total number of coins is

a) 744

b) 612

c) 961

d) 1200

Answer: (c)

Ratio of the number of coins of Re. 1, 50 paise and 25 paise

= 3 : 8 : 20

Ratio of the values of these coins

= $3 : 8/2 : 20/4$ = 3 : 4 : 5

Value of 1 rupee coins

= $3/12 × $372 = Rs.93

Value of 50 paise coins

= $4/12 × 372$ = Rs.124

Value of 25 paise coins

= $5/12$ × 372 = Rs.155

Number of coins

= 93 + 124 × 2 + 155 × 4

= 93 + 248 + 620 = 961

a) 100

b) 135

c) 120

d) 80

Answer: (c)

Ratio of values of 50 paise, 25 paise and 10 paise coins

= $2/2 : 3/4 : 5/10$

= $1 : 3/4 : 1/2$ = 4 : 3 : 2

Sum of the ratios = 4 + 3 + 2 = 9 Value of 25 paise coins

= $3/9 × 90$ = Rs.30

Number of 25 paise coins

= 30 × 4 = 120
