During the Gupta period, the great epics of Ramayan and Mahabharat were given the final form. Traditionally, the authorship of the Mahabharata is attributed to Vyasa. There have been many attempts to unravel its historical growth and compositional layers. Gopuram is not a feature of north Indian temple architecture. In the north, the Shikhara remains the most prominent element of the temple and the gateway is usually modest.
