Directions:
Each of the questions below consists of a question and two statements numbered (I) and (II) given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read both the statements and give answer
Question : 6
What are the dimensions of a certain rectangle ?
(I) The perimeter of the rectangle is 14.
(II) The diagonal of the rectangle is 5.
a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.
c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.
d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient
Answer »Answer: (a)
(I) ⇒ 2x + 2y = 14 or x + y = 17
(II) ⇒ $x^2 + y^2$ = 5
We can find the dimensions of certain rectangle using both equation. Therefore, we need both the statements to find the value of x and y.
Question : 7
How far is Ranchi from Rohtak ?
(I) Rohtak is 899 km from Ranchi.
(II) There is no air route linking Ranchi and Rohtak directly.
a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.
c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.
d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient
Answer »Answer: (c)
The distance from Ranchi to Rohtak is the same as the distance from Rohtak to Ranchi. So statement (I) alone is sufficient to answer the question completely. Statement (II) has no relevance.
Question : 8
The area of a playground is 1600 square metres. What is its perimeter?
(I) It is a perfect square playground
(II) It costs Rs. 3200 to put a fence around the playground at the rate of Rs.20 per metre.
a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.
c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.
d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient
Answer »Answer: (d)
From (I) : We can find the side, area and perimeter of square.
From (II) : Since Perimeter × rate of fencing per metre = Total cost (in rupees)
Hence, each statement alone is sufficient.
Question : 9
Average weight of four persons is 67 kg. These persons are A, B, C and D. When E is included in the group, average weight decreases by 2 kg. What is the weight of A? A's weight is 4 kg more than B's weight.
(I) When B is displaced by another person F, whose weight is 4 kg more than E, average weight becomes 64 kg.
(II) When D is displaced by another person G, whose weight is 4 kg more than E, average weight becomes 65 kg.
a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.
c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.
d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient
Answer »Answer: (a)
Given, A + B + C + D = 67 × 4 = 268
A + B + C + D + E = 65 × 5 = 325
and A – B = 4
∴ E = 325 – 268 = 57
(I) ⇒ F = 57 + 4 = 61
and A + C + D = 64 × 4 – 61 = 195
(II) ⇒ G = 57 + 4 = 61
and A + B + C = 65 × 4 – 61 = 199
Solving the above equations, we can get the value of A. Therefore both statements together can solve the question.
Question : 10
In the given figure P, Q and R are centres of three equal circles. What is the area of the shaded portion in the figure shown below ?
(I) QR is known.
(II) The triangle is an equilateral triangle.
a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.
c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.
d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient
Answer »Answer: (c)
Since, all three circles are equal.
∴ PQ = QR = PR
⇒ ΔPQR is an equilateral triangle.
And area of shaded portion
= Area of ΔPQR – 3 (area of each sector),
(I) ⇒ QR is known.
⇒ side of triangle and radius is known.
Hence, statement (I) alone is sufficient to answer the question.
Now, since all three circles are equal, therefore, statement (II) is restatement of the information given in question.
