Question : 6 [SSC CGL Tier-I 2016]

The average monthly salary of 19 members of a group is Rs. 16000. If one more member whose monthly salary is Rs. 20000 joins the group, then the average salary of the group is

a) Rs. 16250

b) Rs. 18000

c) Rs. 16200

d) Rs. 18250

Answer: (c)

Required average

=Rs. $({16000 ×19+20000}/20)$

=Rs.$({304000+20000}/20)$

=Rs. $(324000/20)$

=Rs.16200

OR

Difference = Rs. (20000 – 16000) = Rs. 4000

∴ Increase in average = $4000/20$ = Rs. 200

∴ Required average

= Rs. (16000 + 200)

= Rs. 16200

Question : 7 [SSC CHSL 2015]

The average expenditure of a man for the first five months is Rs.1200 and for the next seven months is Rs.1300. If he saves Rs.2900 in that year, his monthly average income is :

a) Rs.1400

b) Rs.1700

c) Rs.1600

d) Rs.1500

Answer: (d)

Total annual expenditure of man

= Rs.(5 × 1200 + 7 × 1300)

= Rs. (6000 + 9100)

= Rs. 15100

His total annual income

= Rs. (15100 + 2900)

= Rs. 18000

∴ Average monthly income = $18000/12$ = Rs. 1500

c) Rs.2200

d) Rs.2000

Answer: (b)

Total expenditure of man in a year

=Rs.(4 × 1800 + 8 × 2000)

=Rs.(7200 + 16000)

=Rs.23200

Total annual income

= (23200 + 5600)

=Rs.28800

∴ Average monthly income = $28800/12$ =Rs.2400

=Rs.(10280 + 7470 + 15150)

=Rs.32900
