a) Rs.225

b) Rs.200

c) Rs.125

d) Rs.106.25

Answer: (a)

Total income of A and B

∴ Required average

= ${400+500}/4$ = $900/4$ = Rs. 225

Question : 2

The average monthly expenditure of a family for the first four months is Rs.2570, for the next three months Rs.2490 and for the last five months Rs.3030. If the family saves Rs.5320 during the whole year, the average monthly income of the family during the year is

a) Rs.3580

b) Rs.3200

d) Rs.3000

Answer: (c)

Total annual expenditure of the family

=Rs.(4 × 2570 + 3 × 2490 + 5 × 3030)

=Rs.(10280 + 7470 + 15150)

=Rs.32900

Total income

=Rs.38220

∴ Required average monthly income = $38220/12$ =Rs.3185

Question : 3

The average daily income of 7 men, 11 women and 2 boys is Rs. 257.50. If the average daily income of the men is Rs.10 more than that of women and the average daily income of the women is Rs.10 more than that of boys, the average daily income of a man is

a) Rs. 257

b) Rs. 265

c) Rs. 250

d) Rs. 277.5

Answer: (b)

Average daily salary :

Men ⇒ Rs. x (let).

Women ⇒ Rs. (x – 10)

Boys ⇒ Rs. (x – 20)

According to the question,

7x + 11 (x – 10) + 2 (x – 20) = 20 × 257.5

⇒ 7x + 11x – 110 + 2x – 40 = 5150

⇒ 20x – 150 = 5150

⇒ 20x = 5150 + 150 = 5300

⇒ x = $5300/20$ = Rs. 265

Question : 4

The average expenditure of a man for the first five months is Rs.1200 and for the next seven months is Rs.1300. If he saves Rs.2900 in that year, his monthly average income is :

a) Rs.1400

b) Rs.1700

c) Rs.1600

d) Rs.1500

Answer: (d)

Total annual expenditure of man

= Rs.(5 × 1200 + 7 × 1300)

= Rs. (6000 + 9100)

= Rs. 15100

His total annual income

= Rs. (15100 + 2900)

= Rs. 18000

∴ Average monthly income = $18000/12$ = Rs. 1500

Question : 5

The average monthly salary of 19 members of a group is Rs. 16000. If one more member whose monthly salary is Rs. 20000 joins the group, then the average salary of the group is

a) Rs. 16250

b) Rs. 18000

c) Rs. 16200

d) Rs. 18250

Answer: (c)

Required average

=Rs. $({16000 ×19+20000}/20)$

=Rs.$({304000+20000}/20)$

=Rs. $(324000/20)$

=Rs.16200

OR

Difference = Rs. (20000 – 16000) = Rs. 4000

∴ Increase in average = $4000/20$ = Rs. 200

∴ Required average

= Rs. (16000 + 200)

= Rs. 16200

Question : 6

The average salary of all the workers in a workshop is Rs.8,000. The average salary of 7 technicians is Rs.12,000 and the average salary of the rest is Rs.6,000. The total number of workers in the workshop is

a) 23

b) 22

c) 21

d) 20

Answer: (c)

Total workers = x (let)

∴ 7 × 12000 + (x – 7) × 6000 = 8000 x

⇒ 84000 + 6000 x – 42000 = 8000 x

⇒ 8000 x – 6000 x = 42000

⇒ 2000 x = 42000

⇒ x = $42000/2000$ = 21
