A box contains 280 coins of one rupee, 50-paise and 25-paise. The values of each kind of the coins are in the ratio of 8 : 4 : 3. Then the number of 50-paise coins is

a) 80

b) 90

Answer: (a)

Ratio of the values of one rupee, 50 paise and 25 paise coins

= 8 : 4 : 3

Ratio of their number

= 8 : 4 × 2 : 3 × 4 = 2 : 2 : 3

Sum of ratios = 2 + 2 + 3 = 7

Number of 50-paise coins

= $2/7$ × 280 = 80

Question : 12 [SSC SO 2006]

A man has in all 640 in the denominations of one-rupee, five rupee and ten-rupee notes. The number of each type of notes are equal. What is the total number of notes he has ?

a) 100

b) 90

c) 120

d) 150

Answer: (c)

Let the number of each type of notes be x

x + 5x + 10 x = 640

16 x = 640

x = 40

Total number of notes

= 3 × 40 = 120

180 contained in a box consists of one rupee, 50 paise and 25 paise coins in the ratio 2 : 3 : 4. What is the number of 50 paise coins?

a) 150

b) 180

c) 120

d) 60

Answer: (c)

Using Rule 1
It does not change the ratio, when we multiply or divide antecedent and consequent of the ratio by a same non–zero number as–
e.g. a : b = $a/b = {a×c}/{b×c}$ = ac : bc = a : b

Ratio of the values

= $2 : 3/2 : 4/4$ = 4 : 3 : 2

Value of 50 paise coins

= $3/9 ×$ 180 = Rs.60

Numbers of 50 paise coins = 120.

A box contains 420 coins in rupee, 50 paise and 20 paise coins. The ratio of their rupee values being 13 : 11 : 7. The number of 50 paise coins is

a) 66

b) 132

c) 78

d) 42

Answer: (b)

Ratio of their values =13:11:7

Ratio of their numbers

= 13 : 22 : 35

13x + 22x + 35x = 420

70x = 420 ⇒ x = 6

Number of 50 paise coins

= 22x = 22 × 6 = 132

Question : 15 [SSC CHSL 2011]

Three persons A, B, C whose salaries together amount to 72000 spend 80, 85 and 75 percent of their salaries respectively. If their savings are in the ratio 8 : 9 : 20, then A’s salary is

a) 22,000

b) 18,000

c) 16,000

d) 20,000

Answer: (c)

If the salaries of A, B and C be Rs.x, Rs.y and Rs.z respectively,

then ${x × 20}/100 : {y × 15}/100 : {z × 25}/100$

$x/5 : {3y}/20 : z/4$ = 8 : 9 : 20

x : y : z = 40 : 60 : 80

= 2 : 3 : 4

A’s salary

= $2/9$ × 72000 = Rs.16000
