Some example questions with solved solutions for Conditional Coding & Decoding:

Example 1:

In the question below, is given a group of numbers followed by four combinations of letters/symbols. You have to find out which of the combinations correctly represents the group of numbers based on the following coding system and the conditions that follow and mark your answer accordingly.

Digit 3 8 0 7 4 6 9 2 5 1
Code H $ R A M % L K E @

Conditions
(i) If a number begins and ends with a non-zero odd digit, then the first and the last digits are to be coded as Y and #, respectively.
(ii) If a number begins and ends with an even digit (including zero), then the first and the last digits are to be coded as B and X, respectively.

What will be the code for '764981'?

  1. A % M L $ @
  2. Y % M L $ @
  3. Y % M L $ @
  4. A % M L $ #
Solution (c):

When condition is not applied, the coding is done as follows, coding-decoding-conditional-type-ex-1-1 But here the number begins and ends with a non-zero odd digit and therefore condition(i) is applied here. As condition(i) is applied here 7 and 1 will be coded as Y and #, respectively coding-decoding-conditional-type-ex-1-2 ∴ Code for 764981 = Y%ML$#.

Example 2:

In the question below, is given a group of letters followed by four combinations of digits/symbols. You have to find out which of the combinations correctly represents the group of letters based on the following coding system and the conditions that follow and mark your answer accordingly.

Letter M J R A D B W Z P E I H G U K
Digits/Symbol code 8 4 @ 9 c 1 2 $ 3 # 5 6 % 7

Conditions
(i) If both first and last letters are vowels, their codes are to be interchanged.
(ii) If the first letter is a consonant and the last letter is a vowel, both are to be coded as the code for the vowel.
(iii) If the first letter is a vowel and the last letter is a consonant, both are to be coded as the code for the consonant.

Find the code for 'IBHJRE'.

  1. #614@5
  2. 5164@%
  3. %164@#
  4. #164@5
Solution (d):

When condition is not applied, the coding is done as follows. coding-decoding-conditional-type-ex-2 But here the 1st letter (I) and the letter (E) are vowels and therefore condition (i) is applied here then, I and E will interchange their codes.

∴ Code for IBHJRE = #164@5.

Example 3-5:
Directions for Ex(3-5):

In each of the questions below, a group of numerals is given followed by four groups of symbol/letter combinations labelled (a), (b). (c) and (d). Numerals are to be coded as per the codes and conditions given below. You have to find out which of the combinations (a), (b), (c) and (d) is correct and indicate your answer accordingly. If none of the four combinations represents the correct code, mark (e) as your answer.

Digit 7 3 5 0 2 1 6 4 9 8
Code N H L T F D R Q G P
  1. If the first digit is even and the last digit is odd, they are to be coded as $ and @. respectively.
  2. If the first digit is odd and the last digit is even, they are to be coded as # and £, respectively.
  3. If O is preceded as well as followed by an odd digit, then O is to be coded as ↑.
  4. If O is preceded as well as followed by an even digit, then 0 is to be coded as ↓.
  5. O is not considered as either even or odd.
Example 3:

What will be the code for 36250098?

  1. $RFLTTG€
  2. #RFLTTG@
  3. #RFLTTG€
  4. $RFLTTG@
  5. None of these
Solution (c):

When condition is not applied, the coding is done as follows, coding-decoding-conditional-type-ex-3-1 But here the first digit is odd and the last digit is even, therefore condition (ii) is applied here, As condition (ii) is applied here, 3 is coded as # and 8 is coded as € coding-decoding-conditional-type-ex-3-2 ∴ Code for 36250098 = #RFLTTG€

Example 4:

QLP↓RNT is the code for the following numbers?

  1. 6580470
  2. 4780650
  3. 6580470
  4. Data inadequate
  5. None of these
Solution (e):

Q, L, P, ↓, R, N, and T are the codes for 4, 5, 8, 0, 6, 7 and 0 respectively. So, the required number is 4580670.

Example 5:

$QRL↑H@ could be the code for which of the following numbers?

  1. 8465032
  2. 8456037
  3. 8465034
  4. 6475031
  5. None of these
Solution (e):

Q, R, L, H are the codes for 4, 6, 5, 3 respectively. ↑ is the code for 0.

So, $QRL↑H@ shall be the code of a number of the form ?46503?, in which the first digit must be even and the last digit must be odd. Clearly, there is no such number in the given alternatives.

Example 6-7:
Directions:

In each question below, is given a group of letters followed by four combinations of digits/symbols numbered (a), (b), (c) and (d). You have to find out which of the four combinations correctly represents the group of letters based on the following coding system and the conditions that follow and mark the number of that combination as your answer. If none of the combinations correctly represents the group of letters, mark (e), i.e., 'None of these', as your answer.

Letter E R C F L N H K P T A S G
Code % 3 2 5 @ 7 # 6 1 8 4 % 9
  1. If the first letter is a vowel and the last letter is a consonant, both are to be coded as 0.
  2. If the first letter is a consonant and the last letter is a vowel, both are to be coded as 0.
  3. If the first letter as well as the last letter are vowels, both are to be coded as the code of the last letter.
Example 6:

What will be the code for 'ARFTHE'?

  1. %358#%
  2. 4358#%
  3. 4358#4
  4. %385#%
Solution (a):

From Statement III,
If both the first and last letter are vowels, the both are coded as the last letter coding-decoding-conditional-type-ex-6

Example 7:

What will be the code for 'NFRSCA'?

  1. 753%20
  2. 053%24
  3. 0230%0
  4. 053%20
Solution (d):

From Steatment II, coding-decoding-conditional-type-ex-7
