How to learn Position of Letters in English Alphabets?

Sometimes a word or a sentence is coded by changing the positions of English alphabet letter according to a definite pattern, so it is necessary to remember the positions of all the letters in English alphabetical order both in forward and backward orders.

To solve the questions based on Coding – Decoding, first of all it is necessary to remember the positions of all alphabetical letters, both in forward and backward order. Several ways for easy remembering of these positions are discussed below,

1. Forward order positioning of letters:

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP QRSTUVWXYZ
123456789101112131415 1617181920212223242526

By using CFILORUX and EJOTY formulae, we can easily remember the position of letters of English alphabet in forward order.

2. Backward order positioning of letters:

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP QRSTUVWXYZ
262524232221201918171615141312 1110987654321

If you find it difficult to remember backwardorder position but, if they keep forward order positions of letters in the mind, they can easily calculated the backward order position of letters in the following ways.

Backward order position of any letter = 27 - Forward order position of the letters

ie., Backward order position of A = 27 - Forward order position A

= 27 - 1 = 26

3. Opposite order positioning of letters:

These are called opposite letters as the forward order corresponding position of an opposite letter is as same as the backward order corresponding position of its opposite letter.

ABCDEFGHIJKLM
12345678910111213
ZYXWVUTSRQPON
2625242322212019 1817161514

Opposite letter pairs will be shown as

ABCDEFGHIJKLM
ZYXWVUTSRQPON

F and U is the opposite pair of letters.

Now, it is clear from the above presentation that two letters are called opposite to each other, if sum of their corresponding position is equal to 27

i.e. F + U = 6 + 21 = 27

Easy methods to leran all "Arrangement of Letters & it's types":

Letters of English alphabet can be arranged either in linear form or in circular form as shown below.

1. Linear Arrangement: (Straight Line Arrangement)

  1. Left to Right linear arrangement of alphabets,
  2. coding-decoding-linear-arrangment-left-to-right
  3. Right to Left linear arrangement of alphabets.
  4. coding-decoding-linear-arrangment-right-to-left

2. Circular Arrangement:

  1. Clockwise arrangement of alphabets,
  2. coding-decoding-circular-arrangment-clockwise-direction
  3. Anti-Clockwise arrangement of alphabets.
  4. coding-decoding-circular-arrangment-anti-clockwise-direction

Understanding of linear and circular arrangement is very important as when, you have to find the letters forward or backward within the limit of all 26 letters of English alphabet, you can also use linear arrangement but when we have to find the letters before A or after Z, then circular arrangement is very useful.

If you have to find the letter one place forward to A, then that letter will be Z and this result can be found out by using either linear or circular arrangement but when one is asked to find the letter which is one letter backward of A (Z is one letter backward of A) or one letter forward of Z (A is one letter forward of Z), then only circular arrangement gives such results.

Useful methods to remember the position of letters in English alphabets:

Important Note: Some methods/techniques are given below are to remember the positions of English alphabets for forward, backward, opposite order of letters.

1. To remember Forward order position - By using CFILORUX and EJOTY formulae, we can easily remember the position of letters of English alphabet in forward order.

  1. Here is a gap of two letters between each letter of the word group "CFILORUX"
  2. forward-order-cfilorux

    (Sounds like a "medicine name")

CFILORUX Sounds like an injection name because the injections which are prescribed by doctors are having strange names.

  3. Here is a gap of four letters between each letter of the word group "EJOTY"
  4. forward-order-ejoty

(Sounds like a Female name "Joti")

EJOTY sounds like a girl name that is JOTI, so it could be remembered by this name.

2. To remember Backward order position - You will find it difficult to remember backward order position but, if they keep forward order positions of letters in their mind, they can easily calculate the backward order positions of letters in the following way

To find the,
Backward order position of a letter = (27 – Forward order position of a letter)

E.g.,
Backward order position of a letter (D) = (27 – Forward order position of a letter (D)) = 27 – 4 = 23

Therefore, Backward order position of a letter (D) = 23

3. To remember Opposite order position – There is an easy way to understand by a simple formula to find the corresponding position of that letter.

First find the position of opposite letter,

Opposite position of a letter = (27 – Corresponding position of that letter)

E.g.,
Opposite position of a letter (F) = (27 – Corresponding position of that letter (F)) = 27 – 6 = 21

Therefore, Opposite position of a letter (F) = 21

i.e., position of (U) = 21

Then, make sum of their corresponding positions which will be equal to 27

i.e., F + U = 6 + 21 = 27
