Question : 26 [SSC CGL Prelim 2004]

An amount of money is to be distributed among P, Q and R in the ratio of 2 : 7 : 9. The total of P’s and Q’s share is equal to R’s share. What is the difference between the shares of P and Q ?

a) 9000

b) Information inadequate

c) 7500

d) 5000

Answer: (b)

Let the amount to be distributed be Rs.x.

P : Q : R = 2 : 7 : 9

Sum of the ratios = 2+7 + 9 = 18

P = $2/18 × x = x/9$

Q = $7/18$ x

R = ${9x}/18 = x/2$

As given,

$x/9 + {7x}/18 = x/2$

Thus, we get no conclusion.

Amount should necessarily be known.

Question : 27 [SSC CGL Prelim 1999]

Divide 1250 among A, B, C, so that A gets 2 9 of B’s share and C gets 3 4 of A’s share.

a) 150, 800, 300

b) 200, 900, 75

c) 200, 900, 150

d) 200, 800, 250

Answer: (c)

A = B × $2/9 = {2B}/9$

$C= {3A}/4 ; A = 4/3C$

Ratio of A : B : C = 4 : 18 : 3

Share of A = $4/25 × 1250$ = Rs.200

Share of B = $18/25 × 1250$ = Rs.900

Share of C = $3/25 × 1250$ = Rs.150

Question : 28

180 are to be divided among 66 persons (men and women). The ratio of the total amount of money received by men and women is 5 : 4. But the ratio of the money received by each man and woman is 3 : 2. The number of men is

a) 30

b) 36

c) 24

d) 20

Answer: (a)

Suppose amount received by men = 5x.

and amount received by women = 4x

According to question

5x + 4x = 180

9x = 180 ⇒ x = 20

Amount received by men = Rs.100

Amount received by women= Rs.80

Suppose the number of men be y and that of women be (66 - y).

According to question

${100/y}/{80/{66 - y}} = 3/2$

$100/y × {66 - y}/80 = 3/2$

${5(66 - y)}/{4y} = 3/2$

660 - 10y = 12y

22y = 660 ⇒ y = 30

Question : 29 [SSC SAS 2010]

600 are divided among A, B and C so that 40 more than 2 5 of A’s share, 20 more than 2 7 of B’s share and 10 more than 9 17 of C’s share are all equal. A’s share is

a) 150

b) 140

c) 160

d) 180

Answer: (a)

$2/5A + 40 = 2/7B + 20$

= $9/17 C + 10 = x$

A = $5/2(x - 40)$, B = $7/2(x - 20)$

and, C = $17/9(x -10)$

$5/2(x - 40) + 7/2(x - 20) + 17/9(x -10)$ = 600

x = 100

A’s share

= Rs.$5/2$(100 - 40) = Rs.150

Question : 30 [SSC CGL Tier-I 2013]

700 is divided among A, B, C in such a way that the ratio of the amount of A and B is 2 : 3 and that of B and C is 4 : 5. Find the amount (in ) each received, in the order A, B, C.

a) 150, 250, 290

b) 150, 240, 310

c) 160, 240, 300

d) 150, 250, 300

Answer: (c)

A : B = 2 : 3 = 8 : 12

B : C = 4 : 5 = 12 : 15

A : B : C = 8 : 12 : 15

Sum of ratios = 35

A’s share = $8/35 × 700$ = Rs.160

B’s share = $12/35 × 700$ = Rs.240

C’s share = $15/35 × 700$ = Rs.300
