Question : 16 [SSC CGL Tier-I 2013]

A sum of 300 is divided among P, Q and R in such a way that Q gets 30 more than P and R gets 60 more than Q. The ratio of their share is

a) 3 : 2 : 5

b) 2 : 5 : 3

c) 2 : 3 : 5

d) 5 : 3 : 2

Answer: (c)

According to question,

P + Q + R = Rs.300

Now, Q = P + 30

R = Q + 60

= P + 30 + 60 = P + 90

Hence, P + Q + R = Rs.300

P + P + 30 + P + 90 = 300

3P + 120 = 300

P = $180/3$ = 60

Share of P = Rs.60,

Q = Rs.90, R = Rs.15

P : Q : R = 60 : 90 : 150

= 6 : 9 : 15 = 2 : 3 : 5

Question : 17 [SSC CHSL 2012]

A sum of 7,000 is divided among A, B, C in such a way that the shares of A and B are in the ratio 2 : 3 and those of B and C are in the ratio 4 : 5. The share of B is

a) 1,600

b) 2,000

c) 3,000

d) 2,400

Answer: (d)

A : B = 2 : 3

B : C = 4 : 5

A : B : C = 8 : 12 : 15

B’s share = $12/35 × 7000$ = Rs.2400

Question : 18 [SSC CPO S.I.2007]

2010 are to be divided among A, B and C in such a way that if A gets 5 then B must get Rs. 12 and if B gets 4 then C must get 5.50. The share of C will exceed that of B by

a) 360

b) 270

c) 430

d) 620

Answer: (b)

According to the question,

A : B = 5 : 12 = 10 : 24

B : C = 4 : 5.50 = 24 : 33

A : B : C = 10 : 24 : 33

Sum of the ratios

= 10 + 24 + 33 = 67

Difference between the shares of C and B

= Rs.$({33 - 24}/67 × 2010)$

= Rs.$(9/67 × 2010)$ = Rs.270

Question : 19 [SSC CGL Tier-I 2013]

Divide 2,600 among A, B,C in the ratio 1 2 1 3 1 4 : : . Find the share of each.

a) 600, 800, 1,200

b) 800, 600, 1,200

c) 1,200, 800, 600

d) 1,200, 600, 800

Answer: (c)

A : B : C = $1/2 : 1/3 : 1/4$

= $1/2 × 12 : 1/3 × 12 : 1/4 × 12$

[LCM of 2, 3 and 4 = 12]

= 6 : 4 : 3

A's share = $6/13$ × 2600 = Rs.1200

B's share = $4/13$ × 2600 = Rs.800

C's share = $3/13$ × 2600 = Rs.600

Question : 20 [SSC CGL Prelim 2005]

68000 is divided among A, B and C in the ratio of 1 2 1 4 5 16 : : . The difference of the greatest and the smallest part is :

a) 9200

b) 16000

c) 14440

d) 6000

Answer: (b)

Ratio = $1/2 : 1/4 : 5/16$

= 8 : 4 : 5

Sum of ratios = 8 + 4 + 5 = 17

Required answer

= Rs.$({8 - 4}/17) × 68000$

= Rs.$4/17 × 68000$ = Rs.16000
