The average marks in English subject of a class of 24 students is 56. If the marks of three students were misread as 44, 45 and 61 of the actual marks 48, 59 and 67 respectively, then what would be the correct average?
Answer: (e)
Avg marks = ${24 × 56 – (44 + 45 + 61) + 48 + 59 + 67}/24$
= $1368/24$ = 57
Two years ago the ratio of the ages of Swati and Khyati was 5 : 7 respectively. Two years hence the ratio of their ages will be 7 : 9 respectively. What is the present age of Khyati?
Answer: (b)
Let the ages of Swati and Khyati two years ago be 5x and 7x years respectively.
According to the question,
${5x + 4}/{7x + 4} = 7/9$
⇒ 49x + 28 = 45x + 36
⇒ 4x = 8 ⇒ x = 2
∴ Khyati's present age
= 7x + 2 = 7 × 2 + 2 = 16 years
Present age of Sudha and Neeta are in the ratio of 6 : 7 respectively. Five years ago their ages were in the ratio of 5 : 6 respectively. What is Sudha’s present age?
Answer: (b)
Let Sudha's and Neeta's present ages be 6x and 7x years respectively.
According to the question.
${6x - 5}/{7x - 5} = 5/6$
⇒ 36x – 30 = 35x – 25
⇒ x = 5
∴ Sudha's present age = 6 × 5 = 30 years
A is two years older than his son. In two years, his age will be twice the age of his son. The present age of the son is:

Let C's age be x years. Then, B's age = 2x years. A's age = (2x + 2) years.
∴ (2x + 2) = 2x + x = 27⇔5x = 25⇔x = 5.
Hence, B's age = 2x = 10 years.
10 Yrs ago, Sita's mother was 4 times older than her daughter. After 10 yrs, the mother will be two times older than the daughter. What is the present age of Sita?
Answer: (d)
Shortcut method :
Daughter's age = ${10(4 - 1) + 10(2 - 1)}/{4 - 2}$ = 20 yrs
