The average score of a cricketer for 13 matches is 42 runs. If his average score for the first 5 matches is 54, then what is his average score (in runs) for last 8 matches?
Answer: (a)
Let $M_1 , M_2 , M_3 , ..................... M_13$ are 13 matches played by cricket players.
${M_1 + M_2 + M_3 + M_4 + M_5 + M_6 + M_7 + M_8 + M_9 + M_10 + M_11 + M_12 + M_13}/13 = 42$ ....(1)
${M_1 + M_2 + M_3 + M_4 + M_5}/5$ = 54 ... (2)
From eqns. (1) and (2)
270 + $M_6 + M_7 + M_8 + M_9 + M_10 + M_11 + M_12 + M_13$ = 42 × 13 = 546
or, ${M_6 + M_7 + M_8 + M_9 + M_10 + M_11 + M_12 + M_13}/8$
= $276/8$ = 34.5
The average age of 80 boys in a class is 15. The average age of a group of 15 boys in the class is 16 and the average age of another 25 boys in the class is 14. What is the average age of the remaining boys in the class ?

Average age of the remaining boys
= ${(80 × 15) - (15 × 16 + 25 × 14)}/40$
= ${1200 - 590}/40 = 15.25$

Let the initial number of persons be x.
Then, 16x + 20 × 15 = 15.5 (x + 20)
⇔ 0.5x = 10 ⇔ x = 20.
One year ago, Preeti was four times as old as her daughter Sonal. Six years hence, Preeti’s age will exceed her daughter’s age by 9 years. The ratio of the present ages of Preeti and her daughter is :

Let the ages of Preeti and Sonal 1 year ago be 4x and x years respectively.
Then, [(4x + 1) + 6] – [(x + 1) + 6] = 9
⇔ 3x = 9 ⇔ x = 3.
∴ Required ratio = (4x + 1) : (x + 1) = 13 : 4.
Find the average of following set of numbers, 76, 48, 84, 66, 70, 64
Answer: (a)
Avg. = ${76 + 48 + 84 + 66 + 70 + 64}/6$ = 68
