At present the average of the ages of a father and a son is 25 years. After seven years the son will be 17 years old. What will be the age of the father after 10 years?
Answer: (b)
Total age of father and son at present
= 2 × 25 = 50 years
7 years later total age of father and son
= 50 + 2 × 7 = 64 years
7 years later age of son = 17 years
7 years later age of father = 64 – 17 = 47 years
Present age of father = 47 – 7 = 40 years
age of father 10 years later = 40 + 10 = 50 years
A person divides his total route of journey into three equal arts and decides to travel the three parts with speeds of 40, 30 and 15 km/hr respectively. Find his average speed during the whole journey.
Answer: (a)
By the theorem : Average speed
= ${3 × 40 × 30 × 15}/{40 × 30 + 30 × 15 + 40 × 15}$
= ${3 × 40 × 30 × 15}/2250$ = 24 km/hr
Of the three numbers, the first is twice the second and the second is twice the third. The average of the reciprocal of the numbers is $7/72$. The numbers are

Let the third number be x.
Then, second number = 2x.
First number = 4x.
∴ $1/x + 1/{2x} + 1/{4x} = (7/72 × 3)$
or $7/{4x} = 7/24$
or 4x = 24 or x = 6
So, the numbers are 24, 12 and 6.
Seema’s present age is four times her son’s present age and four-seventh of her father’s present age. The average of the present ages of all three of them is 32 years. What is the difference between the Seema’s son’s present age and Seema’s father’s present age ?
Answer: (c)
Let Seema's present age be x years.
Then, Seema's son's present age = $x/4$ years
Seema's father's present age = ${7x}/4$ years.
Then, $x + x/4 + {7x}/4$ = 32 × 3
⇒ 12x = 96 × 4
⇒ $x = {96 × 4}/12 = 32$
∴ Required difference
= ${7 × 32}/4 - 32/4$ = 56 – 8 = 48 years
Find the average increase rate if increase in the population in the first year is 30% and that in the second year is 40%.
Answer: (c)
100 → 130 → 182.
Hence, 82/2 = 41.
