Question : 27
Bone matrix is rich in
a) Calcium and Potassium
b) Calcium and Phosphorus
c) Fluoride and Calcium
d) Phosphorus and Potassium
Answer »Answer: (b)
The matrix comprises the major constituents of bone. It has inorganic and organic parts. The inorganic part is mainly crystalline mineral salts and calcium, which are present in the form of hydroxyapatite.
The matrix is initially laid down as unmineralized osteoid. Mineralisation involves osteoblasts secreting vesicles containing alkaline phosphatase.
This cleaves the phosphate groups and acts as the foci for calcium and phosphate deposition.
