Question :1

In an examination Krish scores a total of 654 marks out of 950. What is his approximate percentage in the examination?

Answer: (e)

Required approximate percentage

= ${654 × 100}/950$ % = 68.84% ≈ 69%

Question :2

In an examination, 70% of the students passed in the Paper I, and 60% of the students passed in the Paper II. 15% of the students failed in both the papers while 270 students passed in both the papers. What is the total number of students ?

Answer: (c)

% of students failed in paper I = 100 – 70 = 30%

% of students failed in paper II = 100 – 60 = 40%

total % of students who failed = 30 + 40 – 15 = 55%

total % of students who passed in both papers 100 – 55 = 45%

Let, total number of students be x.

Now, 45% of x = 270

${45 × x}/100 = 270 ⇒ x = 600$

Question :3

By reduction of 20% in the price of oranges, one can purchase 5 oranges more for Rs. 2.50. Find the reduced price of the oranges per dozen. Find also the original price.

Answer: (d)

Let original price be Rs. x per orange.

Then, Reduced rate = (1 – 0.2)x = Rs. 0.8 x

∴$2.50/{0.8x} - 2.50/x = 5$

= $25/{8x} - 2.5/x = 5$

$x = 1/8$

∴ Original price of oranges per dozen $1/8 × 12 = $Rs. 1.5

and Reduced price = Rs. (0.8)(1.5) = Rs. 1.2

Question :4

In a big garden 60% of the trees are coconut trees, 25% of the number of coconut trees are mango trees and 20% of the number of mango trees are apple trees. If the number of apple trees are 1500. then the number of trees in the garden is :

Answer: (c)

If the number of trees in the garden be x, then

$x × 60/100 × 25/100 × 20/100$ = 1500

$x × 3/5 × 1/4 × 1/5$ = 1500

$x = {1500 × 5 × 4 × 5}/3$ = 50000

Question :5

In an examination, 65% students passed in Civics and 60% in History, 40% passed in both of these subjects. If 90 students failed in History and Civics both, then what is the total number of students ?

Answer: (c)

Let the total number of students be x.

Number of students passed in one or both is given by :

n(A ∪ B) = n(A) + n(B) - n(A∩ B)

= 65% of x + 60% of x – 40% of x

= $(65/100 x + 60/100 x - 40/100 x) = 85/100 x = 17/20 x$

Failed in both = $(x - 17/20x) = {3x}/20.$

∴ ${3x}/20 = 90 ⇒ x = ({90 × 20}/3) = 600$.
