The average of 5 positive integers is 436. The average of the first two numbers is 344 and the average of the last two numbers is 554. What is the third number ?

Third number =
(436 × 5) – (344 × 2 + 554 × 2)
= 2180 – 1796 = 384
The average of four positive integers is 73.5. The highest integer is 108 and the lowest integer is 29. The difference between the remaining two integers is 15. Which of the following is the smaller of the remaining two integers ?

Sum of four integers = 73.5 × 4 = 294
∴ Sum of two middle integers
= 294 – (108 + 29) = 157
Difference between two integers = 15
∴ The smaller number = ${157 - 14}/2$ = 71
Find the average of the following set of scores: 341, 292, 254, 375, 505, 639
Answer: (b)
Required average
= $(341 + 292 + 254 + 375 + 505 + 639)/6$
= $2406/6$ = 401
The average salary of all the workers in a workshop is Rs. 8,000. The average salary of 7 technicians is Rs. 12,000 and the average salary of the rest is Rs. 6,000. The total number of workers in the workshop is

Let total number of workers be n
total salary of all workers = 8000 n
total salary of 7 technicians = 7 × 12000 = 84,000
total salary of remaining workers = (n – 7) × 6000
84000 + (n – 7) × 6000 = 8000 n
84 + 6n – 42 = 8n
42 = 2n ⇒ n = 21
The average of the ages of 15 students in a class is 19 years. When 5 new students are admitted to the class, the average age of the class becomes 18.5 years. What is the average age of the 5 newly admitted students?

Total age of 15 students of the class
= 15 × 19 =285
Total age of 20 students of the class
= 18.5 × 20=370
Total age of 5 new students
= 370 – 285 = 85 years
average age of new students = $85/5 = 17$ years
