time and work Model Questions & Answers, Practice Test for ssc mts paper 1 2023

Question :1

16 men can complete a piece of work in 8 days. In how many days can 12 men complete the same piece of work?

Answer: (b)

∵16 men can complete the work in 8 days.

∴ 1 man can complete the work in 8 × 16

∴ 12 men can complete the same work in

${16×8}/12={32}/3= 10 {2/3}$ days.

Question :2

A train 75 metres long overtook a man who was walking at the rate of 6 km/h and passed him in 18 seconds. Again, the train overtook a second person in 15 seconds. At what rate was the second person travelling ?

Answer: (a)

Let actual speed of train = $S_T$ km/h.

Then, $S_T - 6 = {75}/{18} × {18}/5$ = 15

⇒$S_T$ = 21 km/h

Now, let speed of second man = $S_m$

$21 - S_m = {75}/{15} × {18}/5$ = 15

⇒$S_m$ = 3 km/h

Question :3

Two pipes A and B when working alone can fill a tank in 36 min. and 45 min. respectively. A waste pipe C can empty the tank in 30 min. First A and B are opened. After 7 min., C is also opened. In how much time will the tank be full ?

Answer: (a)

Part filled in 7 min. = 7 × $(1/36+1/45) = 7/20$

Remaining part = $(1-7/20) = 13/20$

Part filled by (A + B + C) in 1 min.

= $(1/36+1/45-1/30) = 1/60.$

Question :4

A and B can finish a work in 10 days while B and C can do it in 18 days. A started the work, worked for 5 days, then B worked for 10 days and the remaining work was finished by C in 15 days. In how many days could C alone have finished the whole work ?

Answer: (b)

Let C completes the work in x days.

Work done by (A + B) in 1 day = $1/10$

Work done by (B +C) in 1 day = $1/18$

A's 5 days' work + B's 10 days' work + C's 15 days' work = 1

or (A + B)'s 5 days' work + (B + C)'s 5 days' work + C's 10 days' work = 1

or $5/10+5/18+10/x=1$ or x = 45 days

Question :5

A can do a piece of work in 10 days, while B alone can do it in 15 days. They work together for 5 days and the rest of the work is done by C in 2 days. If they get Rs.450 for the whole work, how should they divide the money ?

Answer: (a)

Work done by A and B in 5 days = $(1/10+1/15)×5=5/6$

Work remaining = $1-5/6=1/6$

∴ C alone can do the work in 6 × 2 = 12 days

Ratio of their share work = $5/10:5/15:2/12=3:2:1$

Share of wages = Rs.225, Rs.150, Rs.75.
