Question :1

What is the ratio whose terms differ by 40 and the measure of which is $2/7$ ?

Answer: (a)

Let the ratio be x : (x = 40). Then,

$x/{(x + 40)} = {2/7}$⇔ 7x = 2x + 80 ⇔ 5x = 80 ⇔ x = 16

∴ Required ratio = 16 : 56.

Question :2

Number of students studying in colleges A and B are in the ratio of 3 : 4 respectively. If 50 more students join college A and there is no change in the number of students in college B, the respective ratio becomes 5 : 6. What is the number of students in college B?

Answer: (d)

$A/B= 3/4$ or 4A – 3B = 0 ...(i)

${A+50}/B = 5/6$

6A + 300 = 5B.

6A – 5B = – 300 ...(ii)

On equating (i) & (ii), we get, B = 600.

Question :3

In a school, the ratio of boys to girls is 4 : 5. When 100 girls leave the school, the ratio becomes 6 : 7. How many boys are there in the school?

Answer: (d)

Let number of boys = 4x

number of girls = 5x

∴${4x}/{5x - 100}$ = $6/7$

30x – 600 = 28x

2x = 600

x = 300

number of boys = 4 × 300 = 1200

Question :4

A sum of money is divided among A, B, C and D in the ratio of 3 : 4 : 9 : 10 respectively. If the share of C is Rs. 2,580/- more than the share of B, then what is the total amount of money of A and D together?

Answer: (b)

Required amount

= $2580/{(9-4)}×(3+10) = {2580×13}/5$ = Rs.6708

Question :5

In a college the students in Arts and Commerce faculties were in the ratio of 4 : 5 respectively. When 65 more students joined Commerce faculty the ratio became 8 : 11. How many students are there in Arts faculty?

Answer: (a)

Let number of students in Arts and Commerce were 4x and 5x respectively.

Then, ${4x}/{5x+65}=8/11$

⇒44x – 40x = 520

⇒ x = $520/4= 130$

∴Number of students in Arts

= 4 × 130

= 520
