Question :16

A man drives to his office at 60 km/hr and returns home along the same route 30 km/hr. Find the average speed.

Answer: (c)

By Direct Formula :

Average = ${2 × 60 × 30}/{60 + 30}$

= ${2 × 60 × 30}/90$ = 40 km/hr

Question :17

Abhishek purchased 140 shirts and 250 trousers @ Rs. 450 and @ Rs. 550 respectively. What should be the overall average selling price of shirts and trousers so that 40% profit is earned? (Rounded off to next integer)

Answer: (a)

Average selling price

= ${140 × 450 + 250 × 550}/{140 + 250} × 140/100$

= $200500/390 × 140/100$ = Rs. 720 (approx.)

Question :18

Tanya’s grandfather was 8 times older to her 16 years ago. He would be 3 times of her age 8 years from now. Eight years ago, what was the ratio of Tanya’s age to that of her grandfather?

Answer: (d)

16 years ago, let T = x years and G = 8x years

After 8 years from now,

T= (x + 16 + 8) years and G = (8x + 16 + 8) years.

∴ 8x + 24 = 3(x + 24) ⇔ 5x = 48.

8 years ago, $\text"T"/\text"G" = {x + 8}/{8x + 8}$

${48/5 + 8}/{8 × 48/5 + 8} = 88/424 = 11/53$

Question :19

Priya's age was cube of an integral number (different from 1) four years ago and square of an integral number after four years. How long should she wait so that her age becomes square of a number in the previous year and cube of a number in the next year ?

Answer: (b)

Let present age of Priya be x

x – 4 = $n^3$

x + 4 = $(b)^2$

since n is a no > 1 on putting n = 2 we get x = 12

So x + 4 = 16 which is square of an integral number thus, consistent with given information after how many years her age becomes such that age before one year is a square and age after one year is a cube

Using option if we add 14 years to current age, we get age = 26 years

Here 25 is a square and 27 is a cube thus making 14 the correct answer.

Question :20

The average salary of all the workers in a workshop is Rs. 8,000. The average salary of 7 technicians is Rs. 12,000 and the average salary of the rest is Rs. 6,000. The total number of workers in the workshop is :

Answer: (b)

Let the total no. of workers be x.

Now, 8000 x = 7 × 12000 + (x – 7) × 6000

⇒ $x = 42000/2000 = 21$
