The average of five positive numbers is 308. The average of first two numbers is 482.5 and the average of last two numbers is 258.5. What is the third number ?

Answer: (c)

3rd number = (5 × 308) – (2 × 482.5) – (2 × 258.5)

= 58.

Question :12

The average marks of 65 students in a class was calculated as 150. It was later realised that the marks of one of the students was calculated as 142, whereas his actual marks were 152. What is the actual average marks of the group of 65 students ? (Rounded off to two digits after decimal)

Answer: (a)

Actual average marks

= ${65 × 150 + 152 - 142}/65$

= ${9750 + 10}/65$ = 150.15

Question :13

The average weight of 47 balls is 4 gm. If the weight of the bag (in which the balls are kept) be included, the calculated average weight per ball increases by 0.3 gm. What is the weight of the bag?

Answer: (d)

The average weight per ball is asked.

Hence the bag does not have to be counted as the 48th item.

Question :14

Find the average of the following set of scores : 432, 623, 209, 378, 908, 168

Answer: (a)

Average = $\text"Sum of observation"/\text"Total no. of observation"$

Required average

= ${432 + 623 + 209 + 378 + 908 + 168}/6$

= $2718/6$ = 453

Question :15

In an examination, 40% of the candidates wrote their answers in Hindi and the others in English. The average marks of the candidates written in Hindi is 74 and the average marks of the candidates written in English is 77. What is the average marks of all the candidates ?

Answer: (a)

Let total number of candidates in Hindi = 100

∴ Total marks of 40 candidates in English = 40 × 74

Total marks of 60 candidates = 60 × 77

∴ Required average marks

= ${40 × 74 + 60 × 77}/100$

= ${2960 + 4620}/100 = 7580/100 = 75.80$
