Question :12

The mean marks obtained by 300 students in a subject are 60. The mean of top 100 students was found to be 80 and the mean of last 100 students was found to be 50. The mean marks of the remaining 100 students are

Answer: (d)

Mean marks of 300 student = 60

Total mark = 300 × 60

Mean marks of 100 students = 80

Mean marks of another 100 students = 50

let Mean mark of remaining 100 student = x

ATQ 100x + 100 × 50 + 100 × 80 = 300 × 60

100x = 5000 ⇒ x = 50

Question :13

Rajeev earns 3/2 times in January, April, July and October than his average earning of Rs. 600 per month in the rest of the month. So his savings in the January, April, July and October goes to 5/4 times that of the rest months saving of Rs. 400 per month in the year. The average expenditure of per month is:

Answer: (c)

Earning in the 8 months = 600 × 8 = 4800

Earning in the 4 months = $(600 × 3/2) × 4 = 3600$

Total earning = Rs. 8400

Saving in 8 months = 400 × 8 = 3200

Saving in 4 months = $(400 × 5/4) × 4 = 2000$

Total savings = 5200

Total expenditure for 12 months

= 8400 – 5200 = 3200

Therefore average saving per month

= $3200/12$ = 266.66

Question :14

The average age of 36 students in a group is 14 years When teacher’s age is included in it, the average increases by one. What is the teacher’s age in years?

Age of the teacher

= (37 × 15 – 36 × 14) years = 51 years.

Question :15

The present age of the father and the son are in the ratio of 8:3. After 12 years the ratio of their ages will be 2:1. What is the sum of the present age of the father and the son?

Answer: (b)

Let the present age of the father be 'x' and that of the son be 'y'.

Then $x/y = 8/3$

∴ 3x = 8y ...(i)

Further, ${x + 12}/{y + 12} = 2/1$

∴ x + 12 = 2y + 24

∴ x – 2y = 12 ...(ii)

From eqn (i) and (ii),

x = 48, y = 18

∴ sum = 66 yrs.
