Western Ghats (also known as Sahyadri) is a continuous mountain range that runs parallel to the western coast of the Indian peninsula. It abruptly rises like a sheer wall to an average elevation of 1,000 m from the Western Coastal Plain.

But, they slope gently on their eastern flank and hardly appear to be a mountain when viewed from the Deccan tableland. They are steep-sided, terraced, hills presenting a stepped topography facing the Arabian Sea coast.
