In each question below is given a statement followed by two assumptions numbered I and II. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement. Question : 2
- Statement:
- "Private property, trespassers will be prosecuted"-A notice on a plot of land.
- Assumptions:
- I. The passerby may read the notice and may not trespass.
- II. The people are scared of prosecution.
a) If only assumption I is implicit;
b) If only assumption II is implicit;
c) If either I or II is implicit;
d) If neither I nor II is implicit and
e) If both I and II are implicit.

b) If only assumption II is implicit;
c) If either I or II is implicit;
d) If neither I nor II is implicit and
e) If both I and II are implicit.

The fact given in I directly follows from the phrase’… for better fiscal management’ in the statement. So, I is implicit.
However, the public response to the new policy cannot be ascertained. So, II is not implicit.
Question : 4
- Statement:
- To save the environment enforce a total ban on illegal mining throughout the country.
- Assumptions:
- I. Mining which is done legally does not cause any harm to the environment.
- II. Mining is one of the factors responsible for environmental degradation.
a) If only Assumption I is implicit
b) If only Assumption II is implicit
c) If either Assumption I or II is implicit
d) If neither Assumption I nor II is implicit
e) If both Assumptions I and II are implicit.
Answer »Answer: (b)
Assumption I is invalid because it is not implied that legal mining does not harm and illegal mining does all harm. It is only implied that illegal mining is more harmful to the environment.
This happens because in illegal mining norms are flouted with impurity. Only a look at Assumption II gives the idea that it is very much implied in the given statement.

It is possible that the Government has import on its mind for the said purpose.

c) If either Assumption I or II is implicit
d) If neither Assumption I nor II is implicit
e) If both Assumptions I and II are implicit.
