Type 5: Coding & Decoding by Word Substitution / Replacement based Verbal Reasoning Tricks & Shortcut PDF
"In word substitution or replacement, a confusing code is provided by giving a different name for the word. Under this pattern, a series of word is given and each word of the series is coded with another word. You are required to find out the code for a word in the given series and then provided the right information regarding the word". See the below given sample question for better understandings,
Example 1:If ‘green’ is called ‘red’, ‘red’ is called ‘blue’, ‘blue’ is called ‘white’, ‘white’ is called ‘yellow’, ‘yellow’ is called ‘violet’, then what is the color of grass?
- Blue
- Yellow
- Violet
- Red
As Colour of grass is 'green' but there 'green' is called 'red' and hence according to the given information colour of grass must be 'red'.
Example 2:
If ‘blue’ means ‘green’, ‘green’ means ‘white’, ‘white’ means ‘yellow’, ‘yellow’ means ‘black’, ‘black’ means ‘red’ and ‘red’ means ‘brown’, then what is the colour of ‘milk’?
- Black
- White
- Yellow
- Green
Colour of 'milk' is 'white' but here 'white' means 'yellow'. Hence, colour of 'milk' is yellow.
Example 3:
If ‘pen’ is ‘table’, ‘table’ is ‘fan’, ‘fan’ is ‘chair’ and ‘chair’ is ‘roof’, on which of the following will a person sit?
- Fan
- Roof
- Chair
- Table
- Pen
A person will sit on a ‘chair’ but a ‘chair’ is called ‘roof’. So, a person will sit on the ‘roof’.
Example 4:
If ‘dust’ is called ‘air’, ‘air’ is called ‘fire’, ‘fire’ is called ‘water’, ‘water’ is called ‘colour’, ‘colour’ is called ‘rain’ and ‘rain’ is called ‘dust’, then where do fish live?
- Colour
- Water
- Fire
- Dust
Fishes live in ‘water’ and as given, ‘water’ is called ‘colour’. So, fishes live in ‘colour’.
Example 5:
If ‘lead’ is called ‘stick’, ‘stick’ is called ‘nib’, ‘nib’ is called ‘needle’, ‘needle’ is called ‘rope’ and ‘rope’ is called ‘thread’, what will be fitted in a pen to write with it?
- Stick
- Lead
- Needle
- Nib
- Thread
Clearly, a ‘nib’ is fitted in the pen to write with it. But ‘nib’ is called ‘needle’. So, a ‘needle’ will be fitted in the pen.
Example 6:
If ‘paper’ is called ‘wood’, ‘wood’ is called ‘straw’, ‘straw’ is called ‘grass’, ‘grass’ is called ‘rubber’ and ‘rubber’ is called ‘cloth’, what is the furniture made up of?
- Paper
- Wood
- Cloth
- Grass
- Straw
The furniture is made up of ‘wood’ and as given, ‘wood’ is called ‘straw’. So, the furniture is made up of ‘straw’.
Example 7:
If the animals which can walk are called ‘swimmers’, animals who crawl are called ‘flying’, those living in water are called ‘snakes’ and those which fly in the sky are called ‘hunters’, then what will a lizard be called?
- Swimmers
- Flying
- Snakes
- Hunters
- None of these
Clearly, a lizard crawls and the animals that crawl are called ‘flying’. So, a lizard is called ‘flying’.
