Type 4: Coding Decoding based on the Replacement of letters based Verbal Reasoning questions Tricks & Shortcut PDF

"In this type of coding, the letters of the words are replaced by other letters following a certain pattern to obtain the code." Such coding can be classified by following types, Also learn all types of coding decoding topics in verbal reasoning section.

1. Forward sequence coding

Under this pattern of coding, every letter of a letter/group/word is coded in increasing order of English alphabet. As given below

Let us considered the coding of ABCD which can be done in following ways as follows

Format 1:

'ABCD' coded with replacing letters in forward order using code (+1, +1, +1, +1) and arranged from left to right.

Some example question to understand the concepts of Forward sequence coding of letters in Alphabet Replacement coding & decoding.

Example 1:

If in a certain code language ‘TREND’ is written as ‘USFOE’, then how will ‘ENTRY’ be written in that code?

  1. GNUSZ
  2. FOUSZ
  3. FUDSZ
  4. FOUZS
solution (b):

ATQ, We know that 'TREND' is coded as 'USFOE' as shown below,

Similarly, 'ENTRY' will be coded as 'FOUSZ' as shown below,

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-ex-1-2
Example 2:

If ‘PEACE’ is coded as ‘RGCEG’, then how is ‘MICKY’ coded in the code?

  1. MOUSE
  2. OKEMA
  3. LHBJX
  4. JDLJ
solution (b):

ATQ, We know that 'PEACE' is coded as 'RGCEG' as shown below,

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-ex-2-1

Similarly, 'MICKY' will be coded as 'OKEMA' as shown below,

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-ex-2-2

2. Backward sequence coding

Under this pattern of coding, every letter of a letter/group/word is coded in decreasing order of English alphabet. As given below

Let us considered the coding of ABCD which can be done in following ways as follows

Format 1:

'ABCD' coded with replacing letters in backward order using code (-1, -1, -1, -1) and arranged from left to right.

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-b1 Format 2:

'ABCD' coded with replacing letters in backward order using code (-1, -1, -1, -1) and arranged from right to left.

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-b2 Format 3:

'ABCD' coded with replacing letters in backward order using code (-2, -3, -4, -5) and arranged from right to left.

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-b3 Format 4:

'ABCD' coded with replacing letters in backward order using code (-1, -2, -3, -4) and arranged from left to right.

Some example question to understand the concepts of Backward sequence coding of letters in Alphabet Replacement coding & decoding.

Example 3:

If in a certain code language ‘FRESH’ is written as ‘EQDRG’, then how will ‘BLEND’ be written in that code?

  1. AKDMC
  2. AKDCM
  3. AKMDC
  4. AKCMD
solution (a):

ATQ, We know that 'FRESH' is coded as 'EQDRG' as shown below,

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-ex-3-1

Similarly, 'BLEND' will be coded as 'AKDMC' as shown below,

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-ex-3-2

3. Mixed sequence coding (both Forward & Backward)

Under this pattern, Forward & Backward sequence coding take place simultaneously

Let us considered the coding of ABCD which can be done in following ways as follows

Format 1:

'ABCD' coded with replacing letters in mixed order using code (+1, -1, +1, -1) and arranged from left to right..

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-c1 Format 2:

'ABCD' coded with replacing letters in mixed order using code (-1, +1, -1, +1) and arranged from right to left.

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-c2 Format 3:

'ABCD' coded with replacing letters in mixed order using code (+1, +4, -5, +2) and arranged from left to right..

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-c3 Format 4:

'ABCD' coded with replacing letters in mixed order using code (-2, -3, +4, -1) and arranged from right to left.

Some example question to understand the concepts of Mixed sequence coding of letters in Alphabet Replacement coding & decoding.

Example 4:

If in a certain code language ‘NAME’ is written as ‘OYPA’, then how will ‘TEAM’ be coded in that language?

  1. UCDI
  2. UCID
  3. UICD
  4. UDCI
solution (a):

ATQ, We know that 'NAME' is coded as 'OYPA' as shown below,

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-ex-4-1

Similarly, 'TEAM' will be coded as 'UCDI' as shown below,

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-ex-4-2

4. Direct letter coding

In this type of coding, some letter/group/word are assigned some codes which don’t follow any rule but are direct codes for a particular letter of the letter/group/words. These direct codes are then used to form the codes of another given word

Some example question to understand the concepts of Direct Letter sequence coding of letters in Alphabet Replacement coding & decoding.

Example 5:

If ‘SILVER’ is coded as ‘ZXYBDQ’ and ‘KAMAL’ is coded as LNCNY, then what will be the code for ‘VIKAS’?

  1. BXNLX
  2. ZXYCN
  3. BXLNZ
  4. LNCBD
solution (c):

ATQ, We know that 'SILVER' is coded as 'ZXYBDQ',

and 'KAMAL' is coded as 'LNCNY' as shown below, from the two we can conclude the answer as,

coding-decoding-letter-replacement-ex-5

From the above two, 'VIKAS' will be coded as 'BXLNZ'.
