Introduction & Concept for Verbal Classification Type 3 - Choosing Odd Letter or Group Out:
This type of concept is also similar to the previous topic "Type 2 - Choosing the Odd Pair of Words Out". If you haven't read yet check the provided link above.
Here in this, Type 3 Classification a single letter or group/ pair in each of four or five options. Three or four of them are similar to each other in the same manner while one is different and this is to be chosen by the candidates as the answer.
In Letter Classification, there is a similarity or pattern among the given letters in the group. You have to identify the pattern and select the one which does not follow the common pattern in the group.
The relationship among the letters is generally based on the following similarities:
- Position of letters,
- Vowels and Consonants,
- Reverse order of letters,
- Addition or Multiplication of positional value etc.
But before moving on to the different types of letter classification, we must know the following different positions & order of English alphabets,
1. Forward order positioning of letters:

Now, let's move on to the actual type of character classification.
1. Single Letter Classification,
- Based on Vowels and Consonants
- Based on Lette Shapes
2. Two Letter Classification,
- Based on Sum of Places of Two Letters
3. Three Letter Classification,
- Based on Similarity of Places of First and Second Letter,
- Based on Similarity of Places of Second and Third Letter,
- Based on Similarity of Places of First and Third Letter,
- Based on Similarity of Places of All Three Letters.
4. Four Letter Classification,
- Based on Similarity of Places of First and Second Letter,
- Based on Similarity of Places of First and Third Letter,
- Based on Similarity of Places of Second and Third Letter,
- Based on Similarity of Places of Third and Fourth Letter,
- Based on Similarity of Places of First and Fourth Letter,
- Based on Similarity of Places of Second and Fourth Letter,
- Based on Similarity of Places of All Four Letters,
- Based on Opposite Letters, &
- Classification Based on Letters Pair/ Group.
5. Other Miscellanous Classification.
- Based on Number of Letters,
- Based on Number of Small and Capital Letters,
- Based on Place of Small and Capital Letters,
- Based on Presence & Non Presence of Vowles,
- Based on Equality of Number of Vowles, &
- Based on Meaningful and Non Meaningful Words.
Below you will see groups of letters. There are four/ five letters in each group. One letters in each group is different from the rest. You must choose which is the odd letters.
Type 3 Classification - Verbal Reasoning

In this type of classification question, specific letters are given in which all but one of the letters have a specific common relationship. Then you need to understand this relationship and choose the odd one where the letters are related differently.

In each of the following questions, four pairs of letters are given out of which the letters in three options bear a certain common relationship. Choose the correct option in which the letters are differently related. Pick the odd one out.

- (a) Except USTO, all others have at least one letter repeated.
- (c) In all others, 1st letter – 1 = 2nd letter, and 2nd letter – 2 = 3rd letter.

4th letter + 1 = 1st letter,
1st letter + 2 = 2nd letter, &
2nd letter + 1 = 3rd letter. - (d) In each pair if first letter is mth from the beginning of alphabet the second letter is mth from end. Refer: Table : Opposite order positioning of letters.
- (c) O - 2 = M + 4 = Q,
H - 2 = F + 4 = J,
T - 4 = P + 2 = R,
T - 2 = R + 4 = V, - (e) M = 13; S = 19; Q = 17; U = 21; D = 4. Odd position value is similarity, except D has a even value.
- (e) N + 2 = P + 1 = Q,
H + 2 = J + 1 = K,
T + 2 = V + 1 = W,
C + 2 = E + 1 = F,
L + 1 = M + 2 = O. - (e) P - 3 = M; E - 3 = B; T - 3 = Q; I - 3 = F; V + 3 = Y.
- (d) One letter is skipped between first two letters except ABCD.
- (a) R - 2 = P - 2 = N,
W - 4 = S + 2 = U,
H - 4 = D + 2 = F,
L - 4 = H + 2 = J,
Q - 4 = M + 2 = O.
