Classification based questions is very common in Bank, SSC, Railway, Defence and UPSC and Private IT Sector Entrance Exams.

In this type of questions, all the options except one are belonging to same category. We have to identify which one is different from the rest.

What is Classification in Verbal Reasoning?

"Classification is defining groups of people or things, arranging them by class or type, and then finding things that are different or odd one out."

There can be many types of relationships between given options.

For example.

  1. Relationship based on meaning,
  2. Functional relationship,
  3. Word/number formation relationship,
  4. Even, odd or prime number relationship,
  5. Divisibility or non-divisibility by a certain number, &
  6. Repetition of certain digits/alphabets in the group.

What are Types/ Kinds of Classification in Verbal Reasoning?

In this Verbal topic, the questions will consist of four/five options or components. All the options/elements, except one, follow a certain pattern/rule or have some common quality and thus form a group. Here, You can find the common relation between them and find the element that does not belong to the group.

Classification may be broadly divided into the following 3 types:

  1. Word Classification,
  2. Number Classification, &
  3. Letter Classification.

Word Classification:

In Word Classification, you are given a group of words in which all except one are related to one another in a particular manner thus forming a group. Then you have to identify the odd word that does not belong to the group.

Number Classification:

In Number Classification, there is a similarity exists between a given number or group of numbers. You need to identify an odd number or a group of numbers that do not belong to a group.

The number classification ia generally based on the following similarities:

  • Square and Square root of a number,
  • Cube and Cube root of a number,
  • Even & Odd number,
  • Prime number,
  • Divisibility test of a number,
  • Sum of digits of a number etc.

Letter Classification:

In Letter Classification, there is a similarity or pattern among the given letters in the group. You have to identify the pattern and select the one which does not follow the common pattern in the group.

The relationship among the letters is generally based on the following similarities:

  • Position of letters,
  • Vowels and Consonants,
  • Reverse order of letters,
  • Addition or Multiplication of positional value etc.

What are the Types of Classification Questions asked under Verbal Reasoning?

Classification is the process of grouping various objects on the basis of their common characteristics like shape, size, type, colour, characteristics and identifying the odd object from the group.

There are several types of questions that can be asked from classification. Some of the types are given below.

  1. Choose Odd Words Out,
  2. Choose Odd Pair of Words,
  3. Finding Out Odd Letters or Groups,
  4. Choosing Odd Numeral Pair/ Group, &
  5. Choose Odd Numeral.

Type 1: Choosing the Odd Word Out:

In this type of classification question, four/five options are given and you have to select the odd word which has no common characteristic with the words given in the other options. This odd word is your answer. Word classification is based on some common characteristics of words.

Some of these common properties based on word classification in verbal reasoning are given below,

  1. Meaning,
  2. Work,
  3. Place,
  4. Number,
  5. Rank,
  6. Technology,
  7. Situation,
  8. Category,
  9. Priority, &
  10. Area of usage related classification etc.,

Type 2: Choosing the Odd Pair of Word Out:

In this type of classification question, specific pairs of words are given in which all but one of the pairs of words have a specific common relationship. Then you need to understand this relationship and choose the pair where the words are related differently.


Type 3: Choosing the Odd Letters or Groups Out:

In this type of classification question, a single letter or group/ pair in each of four or five options. Three or four of them are similar to each other in the same manner while one is different and this is to be chosen by the candidates as the answer.

But before moving on to the different types of letter classification, we must know the following,

1. Single Letter Classification,

  1. Based on Vowels and Consonants
  2. Based on Lette Shapes

2. Two Letter Classification,

  1. Based on Sum of Places of Two Letters

3. Three Letter Classification,

  1. Based on Similarity of Places of First and Second Letter,
  2. Based on Similarity of Places of Second and Third Letter,
  3. Based on Similarity of Places of First and Third Letter,
  4. Based on Similarity of Places of All Three Letters.

4. Four Letter Classification,

  1. Based on Similarity of Places of First and Second Letter,
  2. Based on Similarity of Places of First and Third Letter,
  3. Based on Similarity of Places of Second and Third Letter,
  4. Based on Similarity of Places of Third and Fourth Letter,
  5. Based on Similarity of Places of First and Fourth Letter,
  6. Based on Similarity of Places of Second and Fourth Letter,
  7. Based on Similarity of Places of All Four Letters,
  8. Based on Opposite Letters, &
  9. Classification Based on Letters Pair/ Group.

5. Other Miscellanous Classification.

  1. Based on Number of Letters,
  2. Based on Number of Small and Capital Letters,
  3. Based on Place of Small and Capital Letters,
  4. Based on Presence & Non Presence of Vowles,
  5. Based on Equality of Number of Vowles, &
  6. Based on Meaningful and Non Meaningful Words.

Type 4: Choosing the Odd Numeral Pair/ Group Out:

In this type of questions, certain pairs/ groups of numbers are given out of which all except one may have the same property or may be related to each other according to the same rule. Then you are required to choose the odd pair/ group out.

Let us see the types of number classifications,

  1. Based on Even Numbers,
  2. Based on Odd Numbers,
  3. Based on Prime Numbers,
  4. Based on Non-Prime Numbers,
  5. Based on Square of Numbers,
  6. Based on Cube of Numbers,
  7. Based on Divisibilty/ Multiplication of Numbers,
  8. Based on Increasing/ Decreasing Order of Digits,
  9. Based on Addition of Digits,

Type 5: Choosing the Odd Numeral Out:

In this type of questions, certain series of numbers are given out of which all except one may have the same property or may be related to each other according to the same rule. Then you are required to choose the one odd numeral out.
