Mohan travels 760 km to his home, partly by train and partly by car. He takes 8 hours if he travels 160 km by train and the rest by car. He takes 12 minutes more if he travels 240 km by train and the rest by car. The speed of the train and the car, respectively are:

Answer: (a)

Let speed of the train be x km/h and that of the car be y km/h.

Now, ${160}/x + {600}/y = 8$ ...(i)

and ${240}/x + {520}/y = {41}/5$ ...(ii)

Solving (i) and (ii), we have x = 80 km/h and

y = 100 km/h.

Question :7

X and Y together can finish a job in 6 days. X can alone do the same job in 12 days. How long will Y alone take to do the same job?

Answer: (c)

Let x and y finish the job in A and B days

$1/A + 1/B = 1/6 and 1/A = 1/{12}$(given)

∴ $1/{12} + 1/B = 1/6⇒1/B = 1/6 - 1/{12} = {2 - 1}/2 = 1/{12}$

So, B = 12

Hence, y alone can finish the job in 12 days

Question :8

A and B weave a carpet in 10 days and 15 days, respectively. They begin to work together but B leaves after 2 days. In what time will A complete the remaining work ?

Answer: (c)

(A + B)'s one days' work = $1/10+1/{15} = 1/6$

(A + B)'s two days' work = $2/6 = 1/3$

Remaining work = 1-$1/3 = 2/3$

$1/{10}$ work is done by A in 1 day .

$2/3$ work is done by A in 10 × $2/3 = 6{2/3}$ days

Two cars start towards each other, from two places A and B which are at a distance of 160 km. They start at the same time 08 :10 AM. If the speeds of the cars are 50 km and 30 km per hour respectively, they will meet each other at

Answer: (a)

Suppose the cars meet at point C after 't' hrs.

∴ AC = 50 t and BC = 30 t

∴ 50 t + 30 t = 160 160

t = ${160}/{80}$ = 2 hrs.

So, the cars will meet at 10 : 10 AM

Question :10

A, B and C can do a piece of work individually in 8, 12 and 15 days, respectively. A and B start working but A quits after working for 2 days. After this, C joins B till the completion of work. In how many days will the work be completed ?

Answer: (a)

Work done by A and B in 1 day = $1/8 + 1/{12} = 5/{24}$

2 days work of A and B = ${10}/{24}$

After 2 days A left the work.

∴ Remaining work = $1 - {10}/{24} = {14}/{24}$

work of B and C together = $1/{12} + 1/{15} = 9/{60}$

the number of days required by B and C to finish work

= ${{14}/{24}}/{9/{60}} = {14}/{24} × {60}/9 = {35}/9$

∴ Total days to complete the work

= 2 + ${35}/9 = {53}/9 = 5{8/9}$ days
