Question :11

A diamond falls and breaks into three pieces whose weights are in the ratio 1 : 3 : 6. The value of the diamond is proportional to the square of its weight. If the original value is Rs. 30,000, What is the loss in the in the value due to the breakage ?

Answer: (a)

Let the weight of the three pieces be x, 3x and 6x and value (V) ∝ square of W

V ∝ $W^2$ ⇒ $V/{W^2}$ = constant = ${30000}/{(10x)^2}$

∴ loss due to breakage

= ${30000(10x)^2- (x)^2 + (6x)^2}/{(10x)^2} = {3000x54x^2}/{100x^2}$ = 16200

Question :12

The ratio of ages of A and B is 2 : 5 and the ratio of ages of B and C is 3 : 4, What is the ratio of ages of A, B and C ?

Answer: (c)

A : B = 2 : 5 → × 3

B : C = 3 : 4 → × 5

Now, A : B = 6 : 15

B : C = 15 : 20

So A : B : C = 6 : 15 : 20

Question :13

Five years ago, Ram was three times as old as Shyam. Four years from now, Ram will be only twice as old as Shyam. What is the present age of Ram?

Answer: (a)

Using the options and the first given condition, we get x – 5 = 3(y – 5)

Using the option (a),

x - 5 = 3(y - 5)⇒30 - 5 = 3(y - 5)

⇒25 = 3y - 15⇒40

which gives value of y as a fraction.

Using the option (b),

x - 5 = 3(y - 5)⇒32 - 5 = 3(y - 5)

⇒27 = 3(y – 5)⇒9 = y – 5⇒y = 14

Using the option (c),

x - 5 = 3(y - 5)⇒36 - 5 = 3(y - 5)

⇒31 = 3y – 15⇒46 = 3y

which gives value of y as a fraction.

Using the option (d),

x - 5 = 3(y - 5)⇒40 - 5 = 3(y -5)

⇒35 = 3y – 15⇒50 = 3y

which also gives the value of y as a fraction.

Since only option (b) gives the final value of y as an integer, therefore option (b) is the correct answer

Question :14

If 40% of a number is equal to two-third of another number, what is the ratio of first number to the second number ?

Answer: (b)

Let 40% of A = $2/3$ B . Then, ${{40A}/{100}} = {{2B}/{3}}⇒{{2A}/{5}}={{2B}/3}$

⇒$A/B = ({2/3} × {5/2}) = 5/3$

∴ A : B = 5 : 3

Question :15

The annual incomes of two persons are in the ratio 9 : 7 and their expenses are in the ratio 4 : 3. If each of them saves Rs. 2,000 per year, what is the difference in their annual income?

Answer: (c)

Let annual income of one person = 9x

Let annual income of second person = 7x

Let Expenses of Ist person = 4y

Let Expenses of 2nd person = 3y

Saving of Ist person = 2000

Saving of 2nd person = 2000

According to condition,

9x – 4y = 2000

7x – 3y = 2000

On solving, we get

x = 2000

Annual income of 1st person = 9 × 2000 = 18000

Annual income of 2nd person = 7 × 2000 = 14000

Difference between their incomes = Rs. 4000

∴ Option (a) is correct.
