Find the whole number which when increased by 20 is equal to 69 times the reciprocal of the number:
Answer: (a)
Let the whole number be x
According to question
$x + 20 = 69/x$
⇒ $x^2 + 20x = 69$
⇒ $x^2 + 20x - 69 = 0$
⇒ $x^2 + 23x - 3x - 69 = 0$
⇒ x ( x + 23) – 3 ( x + 23) = 0
⇒ ( x + 23) ( x – 3) = 0
∴ x = 3 or – 23, Hence, 3 is only whole number.
If x and y denote respectively, the area and the sum of the length of diagonals of a rectangle with length 1 unit and breadth $1/2$ unit, then which one on the following is correct?
Answer: (a)
Area = x = $1/2 = 1/2$ = Rational
$d_1 = d_2 = √{1^2 + (1/2)^2} = √{5}/2$
∴ $y = d_1 + d_2 = √{5}/2 + √{5}/2$
= ${2√5}/2 = √5$ = Irrational
If all the fractions $3/5, 1/8, 8/11, 4/9, 2/7, 5/7$ and $5/12$ are arranged in the descending order of their values, which one will be the third?
Answer: (e)
$3/5 = 0.6; 1/8 = 0.125$
$8/11 = 0.727; 4/9 = 0.44$
$2/7 = 0.285; 5/7 = 0.714$
$5/12 = 0.416$
Descending order :
$8/11, 5/7, 3/5, 4/9, 5/12, 2/7, 1/8$
So, $3/5$ is the third.
What is the least number that can be added to the number 1020 to make it a perfect square ?
Answer: (d)
The average of four consecutive even numbers is 27. What is the highest number?
Answer: (a)
${x + x + 2 + x + 4 + x + 6}/4$ = 27
$x = {27 × 4 - 12}/4 = 96/4$ = 24
∴ Highest number = 24 + 6 = 30
