common errors Model Questions & Answers, Practice Test for ssc cgl tier 1 2024

Directions:

Given below are sentences that may or may not have errors.

  • Mark (a) if there is only one error.
  • Mark (b) if there are two errors.
  • Mark (c) if there are three errors.
  • Mark (d) if there are no errors.
Question :1

You should have told to me about it early so that I should have talked to the relevant authorities and sort out the issue.

Answer: (d)

'You should have told me about it earlier so that I could have talked to the relevant authorities and sorted out the issue.' Verbs like advise, recommend, warn are directly followed by the person addressed (without 'to'). Keeping the meaning of the sentence in view, 'earlier' (at an earlier time) would be the correct word qualifying 'told'. Again, 'I could' would be the correct expression. The verb 'sort' should be used in the past tense here.

Question :2

You can buy it at the chemist and the shop is certain to be close by now.

Answer: (c)

'You can buy it at the chemist's but the shop is certain to be closed by now'. As the reference is to the chemist's store and not to the chemist himself, it should be chemist's and not chemist. Sometimes certain nouns can be used in the possessive case without the sec- ond noun— 'the baker's' for 'the baker's shop', 'the florist's' for 'the florist's booth', and so on. 'But' is the correct conjunction as a contrast/ discrepancy is implied. 'Closed' is used as the shop is certain to have been already shut at the time of speaking.

Question :3

It is time I were going, though I already am late.

Answer: (b)

'It is time I was going, though I am already late.' 'It is time + I/he/she/it' cannot be followed by 'were', but only 'was'. The adverb 'already' must come in the correct (mid) position of the clause—'though I am already late'.

Question :4

She still is in bed despite I've tried to awake her.

Answer: (c)

'She is still in bed though I've tried to awaken her'. 'Still' is placed after the verb 'be' but before other verbs; see this sentence, 'She is still in bed' and also the sentence, 'She still waits at the bus-stop'. 'Despite' ('in spite of') is not the correct conjunction; 'though' (or 'although') is to be used. With 'I have' , 'awaken' should be used, as the present perfect tense of the verb is used here.

Question :5

It took us three hours to get to home.

Answer: (a)

'It took us three hours to get home'. The preposition before 'home' that is, 'to', should be avoided here, as a verb of motion + 'home' is mentioned here. A preposition is necessary before 'home' if it is immediately preceded by a word or phrase, as in He returned to his uncle's home.
