Question :1

A and B can finish a work in 10 days while B and C can do it in 18 days. A started the work, worked for 5 days, then B worked for 10 days and the remaining work was finished by C in 15 days. In how many days could C alone have finished the whole work ?

Answer: (b)

Let C completes the work in x days.

Work done by (A + B) in 1 day = $1/10$

Work done by (B +C) in 1 day = $1/18$

A's 5 days' work + B's 10 days' work

+ C's 15 days' work = 1

or (A + B)'s 5 days' work + (B + C)'s 5 days' work + C's 10 days' work = 1

or $5/{10}+5/{18}+10/x=1$

∴ x = 45 days

Question :2

Pipe A and B running together can fill a cistern in 6 minutes. If B takes 5 minutes more than A to fill the cistern then the times in which A and B will fill the cistern separately will be, respectively:

Answer: (b)

Let pipe A fills the cistern in x minutes.

Therefore, pipe B will fill the cistern in (x + 5) minutes.

Now,$1/x + 1/{x+5} = 1/6$⇒ x = 10

Thus, the pipes A and B can fill the cistern respectively in 10 minutes and 15 minutes,

Question :3

A can do a work in 18 days, B in 9 days and C in 6 days. A and B start working together and after 2 days C joins them. What is the total number of days taken to finish the work ?

Answer: (c)

(A + B)'s 2 day's work = 2$(1/{18} + 1/9) = 2/6 = 1/3$

Remaining work = 1-$1/3 = 2/3$

(A + B + C)'s one day's work = $(1/{18} + 1/9 + 1/6) = 1/3$

1/3 work in one day is completed if all of them work together. Hence, 2/3 work will be completed by A, B and C in 2 days. Total number of days taken to finish the work is

2 + 2 = 4 days.

Question :4

If 1000 copies of a book of 13 sheets required 26 reams of paper, how much paper is required for 5000 copies of a book of 17 sheets ?

Answer: (c)

Let numbers of ream = x

∴ ${26}/{13×1000}$=$x/{500×17}$

x = 170 reams

Question :5

A and B can complete work together in 5 days. If A works at twice his speed and B at half of his speed, this work can be finished in 4 days. How many days would it take for A alone to complete the job?

Answer: (a)

Let alone time for A and B be x and y respectively.

Now, $1/x + 1/y = 1/5$ = ...(i)

Also, $2/x + 1/{2y} = 1/4$ = ...(ii)

Solving (i) and (ii), we get, x = 10 and y = 10
