Length of train = 12 × 15 = 180 m.
Then, speed of train = ${180}/{18}$ = 10 m/s
Now, length of train = 10 × 15 = 150 m
∴ Required time = ${150}/{10}$ = 15sec.
A man travelled a distance of 50 km on his first trip. On a later trip, travelling three times as fast, he covered 300 km. Compare the times he took.
Answer: (a)
Let speed by x ⇒${50}/x$ = time taken
also ${300}/{3x} = {100}/x$ time taken.
Hence ratio is 1 : 2.
A cistern has a leak which would empty it in 8 hours. A tap is turned on which admits 6 litres a minute into the cistern and it is now emptied in 12 hours. The cistern can hold

In 1 hour, empty part = $1/8$ th.
When tap is turned on, then
empty part in 1 hour = $1/{12}$th.
∴ Part of cistern emptied, due to leakage in
1 hour = $1/8 - 1/{12} = {3-2}/{24} = 1/{24}$th
Now, In 1 min, cistern fill = 6 lit
∴ In $1/{60}$ hr, cistern fill = 6 lit.
∴ Cistern can hold = 6 × 60 × 24 litre = 8640 litre.
Running at a speed of 60 km per hour, a train passed through a 1.5 km long tunnel in two minutes. What is the length of the train?
Answer: (c)
Let length of the train be x.
Then, 1.5 + x = $60(2/{60})$
x = 2 – 1.5 = 0.5 km = 0.5 × 1000 = 500 m.
A small aeroplane can travel at 320km/h in still air. The wind is blowing at a constant speed of 40km/h. The total time for a journey against the wind is 135 minutes. What will be the time in minutes for the return journey with the wind ? (Ignore take off and landing for the airplane) :
Answer: (c)
Speed of the aeroplane against the wind
= (320 – 40) = 280 km/h
Let the distance be x km.
Therefore, ${135}/{60} = x/{280}$ or x = 630 km
Again, speed of the aeroplane with wind
= (320 + 40) = 360 km/h
Time taken by aeroplane with wind
= ${630}/{360}$ × 60 min = 105 min
