Question :7

A train completes a journey with a few stoppages in between at an average speed of 40 km per hour. If the train had not stopped anywhere, it would have completed the journey at an average speed of 60 km per hour. On an average, how many minutes per hour does the train stop during the journey?

Answer: (a)

Without stoppage, distance travelled per hour = 60 km

With stoppage, distance travelled per hour = 40 km.

∴ Stoppage distance per hour = 60 – 40 = 20 km

Since, speed is 60 km per hour, i.e., in 60 min.(1 km – 1min.)

Hence, stoppage time per hour = 20 min.

Question :8

There was a leakage in the container of the refined oil. If 11 kg oil is leaked out per day then it would have lasted for 50 days, if the leakage was 15 kg per day, then it would have lasted for only 45 days. For how many days would the oil have lasted, if there was no leakage and it was completely used for eating purpose ?

Answer: (c)

Let x kg of oil is used for eating purpose, daily, then

(x + 11) × 50 = (x + 15) × 45

x = 25

∴ Total quantity of oil = (25 + 11) × 50 = 1800

∴ Required number of days = ${1800}/{25}$ = 72 days

Question :9

Three fill pipes A, B and C can fill separately a cistern in 3, 4 and 6 minutes respectively. A was opened first. After 1 minute, B was opened and after 2 minutes from the start of A, C was also opened. Find the time when the cistern will be full ?

Answer: (a)

Let cistern will be full in x min. Then,

part filled by A in x min + part filled by B in (x – 1) min + part filled by C in (x – 2)min = 1

⇒ $x/3 + {x - 1}/4 + {x - 2}/6$ = 1

⇒9x = 19⇒x = ${19}/9 = 2{1/9}$ min

Question :10

Two fill pipes A and B can fill a cistern in 12 and 16 minutes respectively. Both fill pipes are opened together, but 4 minutes before the cistern is full, one pipe A is closed. How much time will the cistern take to fill ?

Answer: (a)

Let cistern will be full in x min. Then,

part filled by B in x min + part filled by A in (x – 4) min = 1

⇒ $x/{16} + {x - 4}/{12}$ = 1

⇒ x = ${64}/7 = 9 1/7$ hours.
