time and work Model Questions & Answers, Practice Test for ibps so prelims 2023

Question :1

A hot pipe takes 3 minutes longer to fill a tank than the cold pipe. Together they take 6 minutes 40 seconds. Time taken by the cold pipe alone to fill the tank is :

Answer: (d)

Pipe 1 (Hot)→3 + X, X → Pipe 2 (cold)

Together ${X(X + 3)}/{2X + 3} = 6{2/3} min.$

= ${X(X + 3)}/{2X + 3} = 6{2/3}min. = {20}/3$

40X + 60 = 3X (X + 3)

⇒40X + 60 = 3X(X + 3)

⇒ $3X^2$ - 31X - 60 = 0

⇒ X = 12 minutes

Question :2

A sum of Rs.25 was paid for a work which A can do in 32 days, B in 20 days, B and C together in 12 days and D in 24 days. How much did C receive if all the four work together?

Answer: (c)

A's one day's work = $1/32$

B's one day's work = $1/20$

(B + C)'s one day's work = $1/12$

∴ C's one day's work = $1/12-1/20=1/30$

D's one day's work = $1/24$

∴ (A + B + C + D)'s one day's work

= $1/32+1/20+1/30+1/24={15+24+16+20}/{480}$

=$5/32$

∴ Out of $5/32$ of work done,

$1/30$ of the work is done by C.

⇒ Out of Rs. 25 paid for the work, C will receive

Rs.${1/30}/{5/32}×25$ i.e. $1/30×32/5×25$ i.e. Rs.$16/3$

Question :3

A man is walking at a speed of 10 km per hour. After every kilometre, he takes rest for 5 minutes. How much time will he take to cover a distance of 5 kilometres ?

Answer: (c)

Rest time = Number of rest × Time for each rest

= 4 × 5 = 20 minutes

Total time to cover 5 km

= $(5/{10} × 60)$ minutes + 20 minutes = 50 minutes.

Question :4

Anna left for city A from city B at 5.20 a.m. She travelled at the speed of 80 km/h for 2 hours 15 minutes. After that the speed was reduced to 60 km/h. If the distance between two cities is 350 kms, at what time did Anna reach city A ?

Answer: (d)

Distance covered in 2 hrs 15 min,

i.e. 2$1/4 hr = (80 × 9/4)$ hrs = 180 km

Time taken to cover remaining distance

= $({350 - 180}/{60})hrs = {17}/6 hrs = 2{5/6}$ = 2 hrs 50 min.

Total time taken = (2 hrs 15 min + 2 hrs 50 min)

= 5 hrs 5 min.

So, Anna reached city A at 10.25 a.m.

Question :5

Cars $C_1 and C_2$ travel to a place at a speed of 30 km/h and 45km/h respectively. If car $C_2$ takes 2$1/2$ hours less time than $C_1$ for the journey, the distance of the place is

Answer: (d)

Let $C_1$ takes t hrs. Then,

∵ Distance is same.

∴ 30t = 45$(t - 5/2)$

⇒ t = ${15}/2$ hrs

∴ Distance = 30 × ${15}/2$ = 225km
