A car covers a distance of 540 km in 9 hours. Speed of a train is double the speed of the car. Two-third the speed of the train is equal to the speed of a bike. How much distance will the bike cover in 5 hours ?

Answer: (b)

Speed of car

= $540/9$

= 60 kms/hr.

Speed of bike

= $60 × 2 × 2/3$

= 80 kms/hr.

Distance covered by bike

= 80 × 5

= 400 kms.

Question :2

Two persons P and Q start at the same time from city A for city B, 60 km away. P travels 4 km/h slower than Q. Q reaches city B and at once turns back meeting P, 12 km from city B. What is the speed of P ?

Answer: (c)

Distance between P and Q = 60 km

Let the speed of Q = x km/h

Then the speed of P = (x – 4 ) km/h

Distance travelled by Q till they meet P

= 60 + 12 = 72 km

Time taken by Q till they meet = ${72}/x$

Distance travelled by P till they meet

= 60 – 12 = 48 km

Time taken by P till they meet = ${48}/{x - 4}$

since time taken by both will be equal,

∴ ${72}/x = {48}/{x - 4}$⇒72x – 288 = 48x

⇒24x = 288⇒x = 12 km/h

∴ Speed of P = x – 4

= 12 – 4 = 8 km/h

A bus covers a distance of 2,924 kms in 43 hours. What is the speed of the bus?

Answer: (b)

Speed of bus=$\text"Distance covered"/\text"Time taken"$

= $2924/43$ = 68 kmph.

Question :4

A boat travels upstream from B to A and downstream from A to B in 3 hours. If the speed of the boat in still water is 9 km/hr and the speed of the current is 3 km/hr the distance between A and B is ________ km.

Answer: (c)

Let the distance be x km.

Now, upstream speed = 9 – 3 = 6 km/hr.

and downstream speed = 9 + 3 = 12 km/hr.

Total time taken in upstream and downstream journey

= $x/6 + x/{12}$ = 3

or, ${18x}/{72} = 3 ∴ x = {3 × 72}/18$ = 12 km

Question :5

A 225 m long train is running at a speed of 30 km/hour. How much time does it take to cross a man running at 3 km/hour in the same direction ?

Answer: (b)

Length of train = 225 m

Speed of train = 30 km/h

Speed of Man = 3 km/hr

∵ the man is going in same direction than relatives

speed = (30 – 3) = 27 km/h

Then time taken

${225}/{27 × 5/{18}} sec = {225 × 2}/{3 × 5}$ = 30 seconds.
