The Farakka Barrage was created by India in 1975 to divert water from the Ganges River to the Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system. It was designed to check water flow to Bangladesh by diverting water from the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna basin.
Besides, it aimed to serve the need for preservation and maintenance of the Kolkata Port by improving the regime and navigability of the Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system.
It aimed to flush out the sediment deposition from the Kolkata harbour and thus prevent erosion of Kolkata port.
