Question : 1
Consider the following statements: An ordinary light bulb has a rather short life because the:
- filament wire is not uniform.
- bulb cannot be evacuated completely.
- wires supporting the filament melt at high temperatures.
a) 1 and 2
b) 1 and 3
c) 2 and 3
d) 1, 2 and 3
Answer »Answer: (d)
The electric light bulb uses a glowing wire filament heated by electrical resistance to white to generate light (a process known as thermal radiation).
The ‘bulb’ is the glass enclosure which keeps the filament in a vacuum or low-pressure noble gas. Complete evacuation of bulb is not possible. A small quantity of gases left behind which expands on heating by heat through filament.
Moreover, the wires supporting the filament sometimes melt due to high heat generated as a result of high resistance of filament. Thus, these factors leads to short life span of ordinary bulb.
Question : 2
When the S–pole of a magnet is placed near an unknown pole of another magnet, the two magnets
a) attract each other because the unknown pole is S–pole
b) repel each other because the unknown pole is N–pole
c) repel each other because the unknown pole is S–pole
d) can either attract or repel
Answer »Answer: (c)
Question : 3
If the distance between the conduction band and valence band is 1 eV. This combination is
a) conductor
b) metal
c) semiconductor
d) insulator
Answer »Answer: (c)
Distance between conduction band and valence band = Fermi gap energy = 1eV.
Since there is a small gap between the conduction and valence band so it is semiconductor.
Question : 4
A current I flows through a potential difference V in an electrical circuit containing a resistance R. The product of V and I, i.e., VI may be understood as
a) thermal power radiated by the circuit
b) resistance R
c) heat generated by the circuit
d) rate of change of resistance
Answer »Answer: (a)
Question : 5
What is the difference between a CFL and an LED Lamp?
- To produce light, a CFL uses mercury vapour and phosphor while an LED lamp uses semiconductor material.
- The average life span of a CFL is much longer than of an LED lamp.
- A CFL is less energy efficient as compared to an LED lamp.
a) 1 and 3
b) Only 1
c) 2 and 3
d) 1, 2 and 3
Answer »Answer: (a)
Question : 6
The magnetic compass is not useful for navigation near the magnetic poles. Since
a) H = 0
b) R = 0
c) V = 0
d) ϴ = 0°
Answer »Answer: (a)
Near the magnetic poles, H = 0, therefore, magnetic compass will not work.
