MOST IMPORTANT quantitative aptitude - 4 EXERCISES
The following question based on discount topic of quantitative aptitude
(a) 15 per cent
(b) 12 per cent
(c) 14 per cent
(d) 10 per cent
The correct answers to the above question in:
Answer: (a)
Let the second discount be x per cent.
According to the question,
$450 × {100 - 10}/100 × {100 - x}/100$ = 344.25
100 - x = ${344.25 × 100 × 100}/{450 × 90}$
100 - x = 85
x = 100 - 85 = 15%.
Using Rule 3,
Here, M.P. = Rs.450, S.P. = Rs.344.25, $D_1 = 10%, D_2$ = ?
S.P. = M.P.$({100 - D_1}/100)({100 - D_2}/100)$
$344.25 = 450 × ({100 - 10}/100)({100 - D_2}/100)$
$3442500/{450 × 90} = (100 - D_2)$
$85 = 100 - D_2 ⇒ D_2$ = 15%

Question : 1
A person paid Rs.17,000 for a motor-car after a single discount of 15%. If he is given successive discounts of 5% and 10% then how much he would pay ?
a) Rs.18,900
b) Rs.17,100
c) Rs.17,000
d) Rs.17,010
Answer »Answer: (b)
Let 'x' be the marked price Single Discount = 15%
100 - 15 = 85
85% of x = 17,000
$x = {17,000}/85 × 100$ = Rs.20,000
Required SP
= $20,000 × 95/100 × 90/100$
= 180 × 95 = Rs.17100
Using Rule 2,If article is sold on D% discount, thenSP = ${\text"MP"(100 - D)}/100$MP = ${\text"SP" × 100}/{100 - D}$
Using Rule 3,When successive Discounts $D_1, D_2, D_3$, so on, are given thenSP = MP$({100 - D_1}/100)({100 - D_2}/100)({100 - D_3}/100)$
M.P. = ${S.P. × 100}/{100 - D}$
= ${17000 × 100}/{100 - 15}$
= ${17000 × 100}/85$
M.P. = 20000
Also,
S.P. = M.P.$({100 - D_1}/100)({100 - D_2}/100)$
= 20000$({100 - 5}/100)({100 - 10}/100)$
= $20000 × 95/100 × 90/100$
= 180 × 95 = Rs.17100
Question : 2
The price of an article is raised by 30% and then two successive discounts of 10% each are allowed. Ultimately the price of the article is
a) decreased by 5.3%
b) decreased by 3%
c) increased by 10%
d) increased by 5.3%
Answer »Answer: (d)
Using Rule 5,
Let the original price be Rs.100
Increased price = Rs.130
Equivalent discount
= $(10 + 10 - {10 × 10}/100)$ = 19%
Ultimate price of the article = 81% of 130 = 105.3
i.e. increase by 5.3%.
Question : 3
An item is marked for Rs.240 for sale. If two successive discounts of 10% and 5% are allowed on the sale price, the selling price of the article will be
a) Rs.36
b) Rs.34.80
c) Rs.205.20
d) Rs.204
Answer »Answer: (c)
A single discount equal to the two successive discounts
= $(10 + 5 - {10 × 5}/100)%$ = 14.5%
Selling price of the article
= 85.5% of Rs.240
= Rs.${85.5 × 240}/100$ = Rs.205.20
Using Rule 3,
Here, M.P. = Rs. 240, $D_1 = 10%, D_2$ = 5%
S.P. = M.P.$({100 - D_1}/100)({100 - D_2}/100)$
= $240({100 - 10}/100)({100 - 5}/100)$
= $240 × 90/100 × 95/100$
= Rs.205.20
Question : 4
The marked price of a T.V. is Rs.16,000. After two successive discounts it is sold for Rs.11,400. If the first discount is 5%, then the rate of second discount is
a) 25%
b) 30%
c) 15%
d) 20%
Answer »Answer: (a)
After a discount of 5%
SP = ${95 × 16000}/100$ = Rs.15200
Let the second discount be x%.
x% of 15200 = (15200 - 11400)
${x × 15200}/100 = 3800$
$x = {3800 × 100}/15200 = 25$
Second discount = 25%
Using Rule 3,
Here, M.P. = 16000, S.P. = 11400, $D_1 = 5%, D_2$ = ?
S.P. = M.P.$({100 - D_1}/100)({100 - D_2}/100)$
11400 = 16000$({100 - 5}/100)({100 - D_2}/100)$
$114000/{16 × 95} = 100 - D_2$
$75 = 100 - D_2 ⇒ D_2$ = 25%
Question : 5
An article is listed at Rs.900 and two successive discounts of 8% and 8% are given on it. How much would the seller gain or lose, if he gives a single discount of 16%, instead of two discounts ?
a) Loss of Rs.4.76
b) Gain of Rs.5.76
c) Gain of Rs.4.76
d) Loss of Rs.5.76
Answer »Answer: (d)
Using Rule 5,
Equivalent discount for two successive discounts of 8% and 8%
= $(8 + 8 - {8 × 8}/100)$%
= (16–0.64) % = 15.36 %
SP = (100 –15.36) % of 900
= Rs.$({84.64 × 900}/100)$ = Rs.761.76
For a single discount of 16%,
SP = 84% of 900
= Rs.$({84 × 900}/100)$ = Rs.756
Certainly seller will lose in this case.
Loss = Rs. (761.76 - 756) = Rs.5.76
Question : 6
The marked price of watch was Rs.820. A man bought the watch for Rs.570.72 after getting two successive discounts, of which the first was 20%. The second discount was
a) 11%
b) 13%
c) 18%
d) 15%
Answer »Answer: (b)
Total discount
=Rs.(820 - 570.72) = Rs.249.28
First discount = $820 × 20/100$ = Rs.164
Second discount
= Rs.(249.28 - 164) = Rs.85.28
Price of the article after first discount
= Rs.(820 - 164) = Rs.656
If the second discount be x% , then
x% of 656 = 85.28
$x = {85.28 × 100}/656 = 13%$
Using Rule 3,
Here, M.P. = Rs.820, S.P. = 570.72, $D_1 = 20%, D_2$ = ?
S.P. = M.P.$({100 - D_1}/100)({100 - D_2}/100)$
$570.72 = 820 ({100 - 20}/100)({100 - D_2}/100)$
$5707200/{820 × 80} = 100 - D_2$
$100 - D_2 = 87 ⇒ D_2$ = 13%
