A motorist starts at a point on a road and follows all traffic signals literally. His car is heading towards the north. He encounters the following signals (the time mentioned in each case below is applicable after crossing the previous signal).

Question : 1

The total distance traveled by the motorist from the starting point till the last signal is:

a) None of these.

b) 90 km.

c) 120 km.

d) 100 km.

Answer: (b)

direction-and-distance

Note:

s = Distance covered; v = Velocity (km/hr) t = Time taken; s = v × t

The total distance travelled by the motorist from the starting point till last signal is

10 + 10 + 20 + 40 + 10 = 90 km.

DIRECTIONS:

Read the given information carefully and answer below Question.-

  1. There are 5 friends A, B, C, D and E standing randomly.
  2. B is to the northeast of E.
  3. D is 2km to the east of E, who is 6km to the west of A.
  4. C is to the northwest of D and in the line of EB.
  5. D is 4km the south of B.

Question : 2

In which direction is C with respect to A ?

a) Northwest

b) Northeast

c) South west

d) South east

e) None of these

Answer: (a)

Question : 3

In which direction is A with respect to B ?

a) Northeast

b) Northwest

c) Southeast

d) Southwest

e) None of these

Answer: (c)

Question : 4

What is the position radial distance of the motorist when he reaches the last signal:

a) 45 km. away to the northwest of the Starting Point.

b) 45 km. directly north of Starting Point.

c) 50 km. away to the northeast of the Starting Point.

d) 30 km. directly to the east of the Starting Point.

Answer: (c)

direction-and-distance

Note: According to Pythagoras’ theorem, for a rightangled triangle.

direction-and-distance

BC2 = AB2 + AC2

BC = $√{AB^2 = AC^2}$

$√{ST^2 = TF^2}$

=$√{40^2 + 30^2}$ = $√{2500}$

= 50km

Question : 5

After the starting point if the 1st signal were 1 red and 2 green lights, what would be the final position of the motorist

direction-and-distance

TF = 50 km;

ST = 40 km

Considering the above figure, option c is correct, 50 km to the east and 40 km to the north.

Question : 6

B is 15 km east of point A. Point C is 15 km south of B and 7 km east of D is point C. 20 km north of point D is point E, and 13 Km east of point G is point E. What is shortest distance between A and G, and also point G is which direction respect of point A?

a) $5√5 km,$ south-east

b) $4√2 km,$ south-west

c) $2√5 km,$ north-east

d) $5√2 km,$ north-west

e) None of these

Answer: (d)

AG = $√ (5^2 + 5^2 ) =√50 = 5√2 km$
