A person starts from a point A and travels 3 km eastwards to B and then turns left and travels thrice that distance to reach C. He again turns left and travels five times the distance he covered between A and B and reaches his destination D. the shortest distance between the starting point and the destination is

The movements of the person are as shown in the figure.

Clearly, AB = 3 km; BC = 3AB = (3 × 3) km = 9 km;

CD = 5 AB = (5 × 3) km = 15 km.

Draw AE

CD. Then, CE = AB = 3 km and AE = BC = 9 km.

DE = (CD – CE) = (15 – 3) km = 12 km.

In ΔAED, AD2 = AE2 + DE2 ; AD = $√{9^2 + 12^2}$

$√{225}$ = 15 km. So, required distance

Two buses start from the opposite point of a main road, 150 kms apart. The first bus runs for 25 kms and takes a right turn and then runs for 15 kms. It then turns left and runs for another 25 kms and takes the direction back to reach the main road. In the meantime, due to a minor breakdown, the other bus has run only 35 kms along the main road. What would be the distance between the two buses at this point ?
